IB DP Design Technology — HL and SL
IB DP Design Technology spans human factors, resource management, product innovation, and the designed world. HL students add a 40-hour collaborative project and an extended theoretical investigation. Both levels share two external papers and a single internally assessed design portfolio.
Topic 1: Human Factors and Ergonomics — Products must serve people — this topic is assessed directly in Paper 1 short-answer questions.
Topic 4: Resource Management and Sustainable Production — Life cycle analysis and circular-economy thinking appear in both SL and HL paper marking schemes.
HL Extension: Innovation and Design — An additional 60 teaching hours covering product innovation, design movements, and cultural context.
Internal Assessment — A 40-hour design portfolio in which students identify a problem, develop and test a prototype, and evaluate against a design specification.
Paper 2 — Extended Response — Two structured questions requiring students to apply design theory to unseen product contexts, worth 40% of the external grade.
Talimat tutors cover the full IB Diploma Programme alongside Cambridge IGCSE subjects, A-Levels, and standardised test preparation across the Gulf and beyond.
+ further IB DP and MYP subjects available on request.
IB Diploma subjects are graded on a 1 to 7 scale, with 7 the highest. The full diploma is scored out of 45, combining six subject grades with up to 3 bonus points from the core.
Top Performers – Grade 7 Award
A grade 7 in IB DP Design Technology signals mastery of design theory, product analysis, and a portfolio that meets every strand of the assessment criteria.
The grading scale shown reflects the IB Diploma Programme and may differ from Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, Edexcel, or other qualifications; speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance.

IB DP Design Technology is one of the few Diploma subjects where analytical writing, practical prototyping, and systems thinking are all examined in the same course. This page explains exactly where students lose marks and what a specialist tutor changes.
The course is assessed across three distinct components: Paper 1 (short-answer, data-based questions), Paper 2 (extended-response design analysis), and an internally assessed design portfolio. Each component rewards a different skill set.
Paper 1 short-answer questions test precise recall of ergonomic principles, material properties, and manufacturing processes. Students who rely on general revision guides miss the command-term distinctions the IB examiner is looking for, such as the difference between describe and explain in a product analysis context.
The IA design portfolio is where most marks are won or lost. Students must move through a full iterative design cycle: identifying a real client need, generating and evaluating design ideas, constructing a prototype, and writing a reflective evaluation against a self-authored specification. A 1:1 tutor reviews each stage before submission, which classroom time rarely allows.
Key takeaways
Every session is live and 1:1. Your tutor works through your specific Design Technology syllabus gaps, IA stage, or exam paper technique, at your pace.

Both levels share the same core topics and IA requirement. HL adds 60 extra teaching hours and a collaborative project.
SL students complete Papers 1 and 2 plus the design portfolio IA across 150 teaching hours. Tutor support focuses on ergonomics, materials, and IA cycle execution.
Start SL tutoring/ib-tutors/design-technology/hlHL adds the Innovation and Design extension, a collaborative project, and a theoretical investigation. Tutors help students manage the extra 60 hours without compromising IA quality.
Start HL tutoring/ib-tutors/design-technology/iaThe internally assessed design portfolio is worth 40% of the final grade at both levels. Tutors review each stage of the iterative cycle before students submit.
IA supportStraightforward answers to the questions we hear most often from IB families across the Gulf.
Yes. Talimat's 14-step vetting process screens tutors for subject-specific qualifications. A Design Technology tutor holds a relevant degree in design, engineering, or a closely related field, not a general science qualification.
Tutors work through both. They review each stage of your child's iterative design cycle, from the client brief and design specification to prototype evaluation, as well as exam technique for Papers 1 and 2.
Yes. HL sessions cover the Innovation and Design extension, the collaborative project brief, and the theoretical investigation that SL students do not sit. Your tutor adjusts the session focus based on your child's registration level.
Paper 2 rewards structured application of design theory to unseen products. Tutors work through past-paper products, practise the command-term distinctions the examiner expects, and build a repeatable answer framework.
Talimat matches families with a vetted IB Design Technology tutor in under 10 minutes. Sessions run Monday to Saturday at Gulf Standard Time.
Yes. Students in KSA, Oman, Qatar, and across the Gulf attend live online sessions. Talimat is a UAE-licensed platform, and all sessions are delivered online regardless of where the student sits their exams.
TOK support sits across the IB Diploma core. If your child is exploring design ethics or technological determinism as a TOK knowledge question, ask your Academic Consultant to arrange a tutor with relevant cross-subject experience.
Changing tutor is straightforward and has no penalty. Your Academic Consultant manages the transition and ensures the new tutor is briefed on your child's current IA stage and exam timeline.
