Cambridge International AS & A Level — Syllabus 9696
Cambridge International AS & A Level Geography (9696) spans physical systems, human systems, global interdependence, and environment and society. The full A Level requires Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4. AS Level candidates sit Papers 1 and 2. Every mark scheme rewards AO1 knowledge recall, AO2 application, and AO3 evaluation in equal measure.
Paper 1 — Physical Geography — Tectonic hazards, coastal environments, glacial systems, and river processes. 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks.
Paper 2 — Human Geography — Population, migration, urbanisation, economic transition, and global interdependence. 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks.
Paper 3 — Advanced Physical and Human Geography — Two extended essay questions from a choice, each demanding synthesis and AO3 evaluation. 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks.
Paper 4 — Geographical Skills and Investigation — Data analysis, resource interpretation, fieldwork planning, and investigative methodology. 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks.
Assessment Route — Staged Assessment Route: carry AS Level Papers 1 and 2 forward. Linear Route: sit all four papers in the same series.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Geography uses a five-grade letter scale. A is the highest grade awarded. There is no A* at A Level. Universities across the Gulf and globally use these grades for conditional offers.
Top Performers — Grade A Award
A Grade A at Cambridge A Level Geography requires sustained command across all four papers, with high-scoring AO3 evaluation responses and accurate data interpretation in Paper 4.
The grading scale shown is specific to Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications and may differ from Edexcel, AQA, or IB programmes. Speak with your Talimat Academic Consultant for board-specific grade boundary guidance.

Cambridge A Level Geography is among the most demanding humanities-science hybrid qualifications on the 9696 syllabus. Students who plateau at a C or B are almost always losing marks on AO3 evaluation, not AO1 recall. This section explains where those marks go and what targeted 1:1 tutoring changes.
The Cambridge 9696 syllabus requires students to move fluently between physical and human geography, applying case study evidence to unseen data sets and constructing evaluated arguments under timed conditions.
Paper 3 is where grade boundaries separate A students from B students. It demands extended writing that synthesises across topics, not just describes them. Many classroom settings do not have time to drill this skill individually.
A specialist Cambridge A Level Geography tutor works through past Paper 3 questions with the student, annotates mark scheme responses, and builds the evaluative vocabulary that examiners reward. The same process applies to Paper 4 skills: sketch map construction, proportional symbol interpretation, and statistical analysis of geographical data.
