Edexcel IAL Psychology demands far more than memorising studies. Students must apply theories to unfamiliar scenarios, evaluate methodology critically, and construct structured arguments under timed conditions. This section explains exactly where students lose marks and what targeted 1:1 support changes.
The Pearson Edexcel International A Level in Psychology is a modular qualification split across IAS units (Units 1 and 2) and IA2 units (Units 3 and 4), with a Research Methods paper running through both levels.
Unit 1 covers Social and Cognitive Psychology, requiring students to apply studies such as Milgram's obedience research and Loftus and Palmer's eyewitness testimony work to AO2 application questions worth 8 or 10 marks.
Unit 2 addresses Biological Psychology and Learning Theories, where students must evaluate the use of animal studies, discuss ethical considerations using the BPS Code of Ethics, and compare classical and operant conditioning frameworks with precision.

The Edexcel IAL Psychology specification covers social influence, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, learning theories, clinical psychology, and criminological psychology across four examined units, with research methods embedded throughout. AO1 recall, AO2 application, and AO3 evaluation are assessed in every paper.
Unit 1 (WPSY01) — Social and Cognitive Psychology: Milgram, Loftus, memory models, obedience, and prejudice studies
Unit 2 (WPSY02) — Biological Psychology and Learning Theories: brain structure, hormones, classical and operant conditioning, animal studies
Unit 3 (WPSY03) — Research Methods in Psychology: experimental design, sampling, ethical considerations, statistical analysis, and data interpretation
Unit 4 (WPSY04) — Clinical Psychology and Criminological Psychology: diagnosis, treatment, offender profiling, and jury decision-making
A* awarded — Based on IA2 unit performance; requires both a full IAL cash-in and outstanding Unit 3 and 4 performance
The Pearson Edexcel International A Level uses a five-grade letter scale from A to E. The A* grade is awarded at full IAL level only, based on outstanding performance in the IA2 units.
Top Performers – Grade A Award
A Grade A in Edexcel IAL Psychology requires sustained high performance across all four units, with particular strength in extended 16-mark evaluation questions in Units 1, 2, and 4.
The grading scale shown applies specifically to Pearson Edexcel International A Level qualifications and differs from Cambridge IGCSE, IB, and other programmes; speak to your Talimat Academic Consultant for board-specific grade boundary guidance.

DIFFERENT EXAM BOARD?
Answers to the questions families in the UAE, KSA, and across the Gulf ask most before booking.
The specification has four units: WPSY01 (Social and Cognitive Psychology), WPSY02 (Biological Psychology and Learning Theories), WPSY03 (Research Methods in Psychology), and WPSY04 (Clinical Psychology and Criminological Psychology). Units 1 and 2 form the IAS; Units 3 and 4 complete the IAL.
The A* is only available at full IAL level, not at IAS. It requires a high overall IAL grade combined with outstanding performance specifically in the IA2 units (Units 3 and 4), assessed by Pearson Edexcel after the full IAL cash-in.
Pearson Edexcel IAL Psychology examinations are available in the January, June, and October series. The modular structure means your child can sit individual units in different series and cash in when ready.
AO1 assesses knowledge and understanding of psychological theories, studies, and concepts. AO2 requires application of that knowledge to novel scenarios. AO3 assesses evaluation and analysis, including research methods critique and comparison of explanations.
Every session is live and 1:1, focused on the exact unit and assessment objective your child needs. Tutors use real Edexcel mark schemes, examiner reports, and past paper questions to target the specific skills that determine grade boundaries.
A Level tutoring starts from AED 65 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit, no hidden fees, and you can cancel at any time. Speak to your Academic Consultant for a session plan tailored to your child's units and exam series.
Yes. Students join at any point in the academic year. Your Academic Consultant will assess which units have already been covered and build a plan that fills gaps without repeating work already done.
Unit 3 (WPSY03) is one of the most technically demanding papers in the suite, covering inferential statistics, experimental design, sampling, and ethical frameworks. Talimat has tutors who specialise in this unit specifically and can provide targeted, dedicated sessions.
