Why IB Psychology HL and SL students struggle with essays

IB Psychology demands more than factual recall. Students must apply research evidence to specific command terms, construct arguments across three approaches, and produce an Independent Assessment that replicates a real study. This section explains where students typically lose marks and what a 1:1 tutor changes.

IB DP Psychology is assessed through a combination of external papers and an Internal Assessment. Paper 1 covers the biological, cognitive, and sociocultural approaches to understanding behaviour, with HL students required to address additional HL extensions in their essays.

Paper 2 tests the application of psychological theories to one of four options: Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Health Psychology, or Human Relationships. Students must select one option and answer two questions, at least one of which requires an extended response.

Paper 3 is exclusive to HL and focuses on qualitative research methods. Students read an unseen piece of qualitative research and respond to structured short-answer questions on methodology, sampling, reflexivity, and ethical considerations.

The Internal Assessment is a compulsory experimental replication study. Students design and conduct a study based on a published experiment, then write a report covering exploration, analysis, and evaluation. This component is worth 20% of the final grade and is one of the areas where a specialist IB tutor makes the clearest difference.

For families across the Gulf, IB tutoring through Talimat means live 1:1 support from tutors who understand both the IB Psychology guide and the expectations of IB examiners. Students do not sit in a group; every session is built around their specific papers, their IA stage, and their current grade target.

Key takeaways

  • Paper 1 requires essays that link research evidence to all three approaches, including HL extensions
  • Paper 2 assesses one chosen option in depth, demanding applied essay writing
  • Paper 3 (HL only) tests qualitative research methodology from an unseen source
  • The IA replication study is worth 20% and needs structured 1:1 guidance at every stage
  • IB tutoring with Talimat is live, 1:1, and matched to the student's current syllabus position

My tutor completely changed how I approach SAQ and ERQ questions. I used to write everything I knew about a study; now I know exactly which command term controls what the examiner wants.

IB PSYCHOLOGY TUTORING — COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions parents and students ask us most often.

Honest answers about how IB Psychology tutoring works, what the IA involves, and what HL students face that SL students do not.

What is the difference between IB Psychology HL and SL?

HL students study all three approaches with extended content, sit Paper 3 on qualitative research methods, and write longer essays in Paper 1. SL students sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 only. The IA requirements are identical at both levels.

How does the Internal Assessment work in IB Psychology?

The IA is an experimental replication study worth 20% of the final grade. Students replicate a published psychological experiment, collect their own data, and write a structured report covering exploration, analysis, and evaluation. It is assessed internally and moderated externally by the IB.

What is Paper 3 in IB Psychology and why do students find it difficult?

Paper 3 is an HL-only paper presenting an unseen qualitative research study. Students must answer short-answer questions on research design, sampling, reflexivity, credibility, and ethics. Many students find it difficult because qualitative methodology is less familiar than quantitative approaches used in Paper 1.

What are the IB command terms students must know for Psychology essays?

Key command terms include 'describe', 'explain', 'discuss', 'evaluate', and 'contrast'. Each term specifies a different type of response. 'Discuss' requires both sides of an argument with evidence; 'evaluate' requires a judgement supported by research. Misreading a command term is one of the most common causes of lost marks.

Can a tutor help my child choose their Paper 2 option?

Yes. A specialist IB Psychology tutor can review your child's strengths across Abnormal, Developmental, Health, and Human Relationships Psychology and help them choose the option that best matches their existing knowledge and the studies they have covered in class.

How many sessions per week does an IB Psychology student typically need?

Most students in DP Year 2 benefit from one or two sessions per week, increasing to three in the final revision period. DP Year 1 students working on IA foundations often start with one session per week. Your Academic Consultant will recommend a schedule based on the student's current grade and target.

Does Talimat offer IB Psychology tutoring in Arabic?

Yes. Several of our vetted tutors are able to support students in Arabic, particularly for students in the Gulf whose first language is Arabic. Contact us and we will match your child accordingly.

How does IB Psychology tutoring support the Extended Essay or TOK?

A number of students write their Extended Essay in Psychology. A specialist tutor can support research question development, methodology selection, and argument structure for the EE. TOK connections to Psychology, particularly around knowledge and the human sciences, can also be explored in sessions.
