IB DP Mathematics AA — SL and HL
IB Maths Analysis and Approaches is built around pure mathematical thinking: proof, calculus, functions, and statistics with a rigorous algebraic backbone. SL students sit Papers 1 and 2; HL students add Paper 3, a problem-solving paper unlike anything in other qualifications.
Number and Algebra — Sequences, series, proof by induction, complex numbers (HL), and the binomial theorem
Functions — Transformations, rational functions, odd and even functions, and HL extension to further function types
Geometry and Trigonometry — Unit circle, radians, vectors in 3D, and HL treatment of complex numbers in polar form
Statistics and Probability — Hypothesis testing, Bayes' theorem (HL), binomial and normal distributions, and linear regression
Calculus — Differentiation, integration, kinematics, differential equations (HL), and Maclaurin series (HL)
Alongside IB Maths AA, Talimat tutors cover the full IB Diploma Programme suite, so siblings and subject combinations are always supported.
+ further IB DP subjects available on request.
The IB Diploma awards grades 1 to 7 per subject, with 7 the highest. A student's total diploma score is out of 45, combining six subject grades plus up to 3 bonus points from TOK and the Extended Essay.
Top Performers – Grade 7 Award
A grade 7 in IB Maths AA demands consistent accuracy across Papers 1 and 2, and at HL, outstanding problem-solving in the extended Paper 3.
The 1-7 grading scale shown is specific to IB Diploma Programme subjects and differs from Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, and other qualifications. Speak to your Academic Consultant for subject- and session-specific grade boundary guidance.
Our students consistently achieve top grades.

IB Maths Analysis and Approaches is designed to challenge students who enjoy mathematical proof and abstract reasoning. This section explains where students lose marks, what a specialist tutor does differently, and what realistic progress looks like.
IB Maths AA is not a course where hard work alone guarantees a grade 6 or 7. The syllabus demands genuine conceptual understanding: a student who has memorised integration rules but cannot reason through a proof-by-induction question will stall at grade 4 or 5.
At HL, the challenge sharpens further. Paper 3 is a 60-minute extended problem-solving paper with no template questions. Students encounter unseen scenarios built around syllabus concepts, requiring them to connect ideas across topics, for example linking Maclaurin series to limits or complex numbers to geometric transformations.
A specialist IB Maths AA tutor identifies the specific gap, whether that is shaky algebra slowing calculus work, poor command term literacy causing misread questions, or IA exploration topics that are too narrow to score well on criterion D and E. Classroom teachers cannot always address these individually. A live 1:1 session can.
Key takeaways
Every student is matched to a vetted IB Maths AA specialist, then follows a structured journey from diagnostic session to exam readiness.

Vetting Steps Passed
By every Talimat tutor
Trusted by Gulf IB families
Your Academic Consultant gathers your child's current grade, target, and exam session. A vetted IB Maths AA tutor is matched in under 10 minutes, and the first session includes a diagnostic to pinpoint topic gaps.
Using the diagnostic results, your tutor builds a session-by-session plan covering the specific AA topics and paper types your child needs most, at SL or HL.
Every session is live and 1:1, scheduled Monday to Saturday at Gulf Standard Time. Your child works through problems in real time, with instant feedback on method, notation, and command term responses.
Your tutor sets timed paper conditions, marks responses against the IB markscheme, and provides written feedback. HL students receive dedicated Paper 3 practice as their exam approaches.
Here is what Talimat students and families report after consistent 1:1 IB Maths AA support.

SL and HL have different paper structures and assessment demands. Pick the path that matches your child's course.
SL students sit Papers 1 and 2. Sessions focus on functions, calculus, and statistics with non-GDC and GDC paper technique covered separately.

Maths Analysis and Approaches focuses on pure mathematical reasoning, proof, and calculus. Maths Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling and statistics. AA is the choice for students heading towards mathematics, engineering, or physical sciences at university.
That depends on their university and career direction. HL is required for mathematics, physics, and engineering degrees at most competitive universities. Your Academic Consultant can advise based on your child's target institutions.
The IA is a 10-to-15-page mathematical exploration on a topic of the student's choice. It is worth 20% of the final grade and is assessed on five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics.
Paper 3 is a 60-minute extended problem-solving paper sat only by HL students. It presents two multi-part questions requiring students to investigate unfamiliar scenarios using their full syllabus knowledge. It is the paper where HL grades are often decided.
Yes. Paper 1 is sat without a graphical display calculator, so algebraic fluency and exact-value manipulation are critical. Tutors specifically practise non-GDC techniques and timed conditions to prepare students for this paper.
Most IB Maths AA students benefit from one to two sessions per week during the academic year, with additional sessions in the weeks before the May examination session. Your tutor will recommend a pace based on the diagnostic.
Every Talimat tutor holds a relevant degree in their subject area and passes a 14-step vetting process. IB Maths AA tutors are selected specifically for their familiarity with the DP guide, markscheme conventions, and HL Paper 3 structure.
Yes. If a student chooses Mathematics as their Extended Essay subject, an IB Maths AA tutor can support research framing, mathematical rigour, and the formal write-up alongside their regular AA sessions.
