IB DP History — SL and HL
The IB DP History course combines prescribed subjects, world history topics, and HL depth studies assessed across Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3. Add the Historical Investigation IA, and students face four distinct assessment demands. Talimat tutors know each one precisely.
Paper 1 — Source-based questions on a prescribed subject; skills in comprehension, value, limitation, and synthesis
Paper 2 — Two extended essays from world history topics; command terms include 'examine,' 'compare,' and 'to what extent'
Paper 3 (HL only) — Three essays from an HL regional option; deeper analytical and evaluative writing required
Historical Investigation (IA) — 2,200-word individual investigation; includes identification of the question, investigation, and reflection on methods of historians
Assessment Objectives — AO1 knowledge and understanding, AO2 application and analysis, AO3 synthesis and evaluation, AO4 use of historical skills

IB DP History demands more than factual recall. Students must apply historical thinking across four distinct assessments, each with its own command terms and mark scheme logic. This section covers why those demands catch students out and what targeted 1:1 support changes.
IB DP History is unusual because it tests the same student on source evaluation, extended essay writing, depth-study analysis, and independent research, all under the same final grade. A student can know the content well and still underperform if their source methodology for Paper 1 is weak.
Paper 1 requires students to work with four primary and secondary sources, applying skills of comprehension, value and limitation, and cross-source synthesis. These are not intuitive skills. Without practising them against past papers and mark schemes, students routinely lose marks they should not lose.
Paper 2 asks for two essays from different world history topics within 90 minutes. The command terms matter enormously: 'examine' and 'to what extent' require structurally different responses. A tutor who has marked IB History assessments knows exactly where those marks sit and can train the response pattern directly.
For HL students, Paper 3 adds three more essays on a regional option, making time management and depth of argument critical. The Historical Investigation IA, at 2,200 words, requires students to identify a question, conduct an investigation, and reflect critically on the methods of historians, a section many students underwrite and lose points on.
Families in the GCC choosing the IB Diploma will find that IB tutoring for History is particularly high-value because the subject's multi-assessment structure benefits most from a tutor who can audit each component individually and build a targeted preparation plan from the start of Year 1.

Every student starts with an academic diagnostic. Your tutor then builds sessions around your specific paper weaknesses, IA stage, and exam timeline, not a generic plan.

SL students sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 plus the Historical Investigation IA. HL students sit all three papers, including Paper 3 on a regional depth option, requiring significantly more analytical writing and source breadth.
The IA is a 2,200-word individual investigation. Students identify a historical question, conduct a structured investigation, and complete a critical reflection on the methods used by historians studying that topic. It is worth 25% of the final grade.
Talimat tutors cover the most commonly chosen HL regional options, including History of the Americas, History of Europe, History of Asia and Oceania, and History of Africa and the Middle East. Confirm your option when booking.
Yes. Paper 1 source technique, including comprehension, value and limitation analysis, and cross-source synthesis, is one of the most targeted areas in our IB History sessions. Tutors work directly from past paper sources and mark schemes.
Starting at the beginning of Year 1 (Grade 11) gives students time to build source and essay skills gradually. Students joining in Year 2 (Grade 12) benefit from intensive exam technique and IA completion support.
Yes. Talimat offers separate IB tutoring for TOK and the Extended Essay. If your child is writing an EE in History, we can match them with a tutor who has subject-specific EE experience.
Tutor matching typically takes under 10 minutes. Once you submit your request, your Academic Consultant confirms the match, and sessions can begin the same day or the next available slot.
Yes. Talimat runs Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time, with morning, afternoon, and evening slots to fit around school schedules and exam preparation periods.
