IB DP Geography combines physical processes, human systems, and spatial thinking under strict command-term expectations. Students who struggle usually underestimate Paper 2 essay structure or misread the IA fieldwork brief. This section explains exactly where marks are lost and what a specialist tutor fixes.
IB DP Geography is a Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) subject offered at both Standard Level and Higher Level. SL students sit Papers 1 and 2 and complete the Individual Investigation. HL students also sit Paper 3, which requires an extended evaluative essay on one of four HL extension topics: Global Climate, Power, Borders, and Cities.
The Individual Investigation is a 2,500-word fieldwork report worth 20 per cent of the final grade. Students choose their own research question, collect primary data in the field, and analyse results using geographic methodologies. Many students underestimate how long the planning stage takes, and how precisely the IB Geography IA criteria reward structured methodology over descriptive writing.
Paper 2 requires students to respond to structured questions and extended essays on the four core units: Changing Population, Global Climate, Global Resource Consumption, and Power, Places and Networks. Examiners reward precise use of case studies, accurate data reference, and direct engagement with IB command terms such as evaluate, examine, and to what extent. A 1:1 IB tutor works through past papers with the student, drilling command-term responses until the pattern becomes automatic.

Trusted by Gulf IB families
Your Academic Consultant gathers details about your IB Geography level, current units, IA stage, and target grade. This takes about five minutes and shapes your tutor match.
We match you with a vetted IB DP Geography specialist, typically within 10 minutes. Your tutor reviews your syllabus and assessment calendar before the first session.
Your first live 1:1 session covers a diagnostic review of your strongest and weakest areas across the core units, optional themes, and, for HL, the extension topics.
Your parent dashboard shows session notes, progress against IB assessment objectives, and upcoming milestones. Your Academic Consultant checks in regularly to adjust the plan.
Our students go into exams prepared for every paper, every command term, and every IA criterion.

SL students sit Papers 1 and 2 and complete the Individual Investigation. HL students also sit Paper 3, a 1,250-word essay on one of four HL extension topics: Global Climate, Power, Borders, and Cities. HL carries more content and greater essay demands.
SL students study two optional themes from the seven available. HL students study three. Themes include Freshwater, Oceans, Extreme Environments, Leisure, Food, Urban Environments, and Climate Change.
The Individual Investigation is a 2,500-word fieldwork report worth 20 per cent of the final grade. Students design a research question, collect primary data, and analyse it using geographic methods. It is internally assessed and externally moderated.
Your tutor reviews your research question for geographic validity, checks your methodology against the IA criteria, and gives written feedback on drafts. We also help students who have fallen behind on data collection to plan a realistic recovery timeline.
The four core units each benefit from precise, data-rich case studies. Your tutor selects case studies that are well evidenced, examiner-familiar, and flexible enough to apply across multiple essay questions, rather than generic examples that lose marks under scrutiny.
Yes. All our IB Geography tutors are familiar with both levels. When you book, your Academic Consultant notes your level and IA stage so the match reflects exactly what you need.
Yes. Paper 3 requires HL students to write an evaluative, evidence-led essay under timed conditions. Your tutor practises this format with you, focusing on the command terms evaluate and discuss, and on building a structured argument from geographic evidence.
The earlier the better, but students in Year 2 who start tuition in the September before exams still make significant progress. We recommend beginning IA support no later than the start of Year 2 and paper practice at least three months before the May session.
