IB DP Biology Syllabus Guide
The IB DP Biology syllabus spans eight core topics at both HL and SL, with HL students covering an additional 60 teaching hours across four Additional Higher Level (AHL) topics. External assessment includes three papers, and every student completes a 10-hour Individual Investigation as their Internal Assessment.
Core and AHL — SL covers 8 core topics; HL adds 4 AHL topic extensions plus deeper content throughout
Three external papers — Paper 1 (MCQ), Paper 2 (data and extended response), Paper 3 (data analysis and options)
Internal Assessment — A 10-hour individual scientific investigation marked on personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation and communication
Options — One option studied from Neurobiology and Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation, Human Physiology, or Animal Behaviour (may vary by session)
Command terms matter — Distinguish, Deduce, Evaluate and Annotate carry specific IB mark-scheme expectations that differ from everyday usage
Talimat tutors cover the full IB Diploma Programme, from Group 4 Sciences to Group 5 Mathematics and beyond. Every session is live and 1:1.

IB Diploma subjects are graded on a 1 to 7 scale, with 7 the highest. A student's total diploma score is calculated out of 45, combining six subject scores plus up to 3 bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.
Top Performers: Grade 7 Award
A grade 7 in IB DP Biology reflects consistent mastery across all three papers, a high-scoring Individual Investigation, and precise command of IB assessment terminology.
Grade boundaries shown are illustrative only and specific to the IB Diploma Programme. Boundaries are subject- and session-specific and change each examination series. Speak to your Academic Consultant for up-to-date guidance.

IB DP Biology is one of the most content-heavy Group 4 subjects, and Higher Level students carry a significantly larger assessment load than the syllabus overview suggests. This section explains what makes it difficult and what structured 1:1 support actually changes.
At Higher Level, students cover the eight core topics plus four Additional Higher Level extensions, adding around 60 extra teaching hours of content. Topics like nucleic acids, metabolism, plant biology and the nervous system appear exclusively at HL and regularly appear on Paper 2 extended-response questions worth 8 to 12 marks.
Paper 3 catches many students off guard. Section A requires data analysis of an unfamiliar experiment, testing skills that go beyond recall, including graph interpretation, statistical reasoning, and identifying sources of error. A 1:1 IB Biology tutor can run timed Paper 3 practice and give feedback on exactly where marks are dropped.
The Individual Investigation (IA) is worth 20% of the final grade. Students must design their own experiment, collect data, and write a full scientific report using IB-specific criteria: Personal Engagement, Exploration, Analysis, Evaluation, and Communication. Many students underestimate the precision required in the Evaluation criterion, particularly when discussing systematic and random errors.
Online tutoring through Talimat means a student in Dubai, Riyadh, or Muscat gets the same quality of subject-specific support as one in London, without the commute or the classroom compromise.

Choose the level that matches your child's course. Both share the same eight core topics but diverge significantly in depth and assessment.
SL students cover all eight core topics across 150 teaching hours. External assessment is Paper 1 (MCQ) and Paper 2 (data response and extended answers), plus the Individual Investigation IA.
Start SL Tutoring/ib-tutors/biology/hlHL students add 60 hours of Additional Higher Level content to the eight core topics. Paper 3 includes a compulsory data analysis section plus questions on one studied option. The IA requirements are identical to SL but expectations are higher.
Start HL Tutoring/ib-tutors/biology/ia-supportFocused support for the Individual Investigation: research question design, methodology, data analysis, and the Evaluation and Communication criteria. Available to both HL and SL students at any stage of the process.
Get IA HelpStraightforward answers on how tuition works, what it covers, and what to expect from your first session.
Yes. Talimat tutors are matched to your child's specific level. HL students get targeted support on AHL content and Paper 3 data analysis; SL students focus on the eight core topics and Paper 1 and 2 technique.
Absolutely. IA support is one of the most requested areas. Your tutor can help with research question design, experimental methodology, data analysis, and structuring the Evaluation and Communication sections to meet IB criteria.
The course covers eight core topics: cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution and biodiversity, human physiology, nucleic acids, metabolism, plant biology, genetics and evolution, and animal physiology. HL students study all eight at greater depth plus four AHL extensions.
Paper 3 Section A presents data from an unfamiliar experiment and asks students to analyse, interpret and evaluate it. Section B covers questions on one studied option. A tutor runs timed Paper 3 practice and gives feedback on data-analysis technique and option content.
Most families are matched with a tutor and have their first session booked within 24 hours. Talimat's average tutor match time is under 10 minutes from first contact.
Yes. Talimat tutors are familiar with the IB Diploma Programme Biology guide and align every session to the current syllabus, including any updates issued by the IB Organisation. If you are unsure which version your school uses, your Academic Consultant can confirm.
Yes. If your child has chosen Biology for their Extended Essay, a subject-specialist tutor can support the research design, literature engagement, data analysis, and the Reflections on Planning and Progress form (RPPF).
For IB Biology, live online tutoring works especially well. Tutors share annotated diagrams, past-paper mark schemes, and data tables in real time. Students in Dubai, Riyadh, Muscat and Doha consistently report the same quality of feedback they would expect from an in-person session.
