Paper 1 — Reading and Writing — Directed writing and comprehension based on unseen Arabic prose passages; tests AO1 accurate language use and AO2 understanding.
Paper 2 — Summary and Translation — Arabic-to-English summary and English-to-Arabic translation tasks targeting AO3 transfer of meaning across registers.
Paper 3 — Texts and Themes — Extended essay responses on two set literary or non-literary texts, assessing AO4 critical analysis and AO5 evaluation of authorial choice.
Paper 4 — Free Writing and Translation — Extended Arabic composition plus translation passage, rewarding sophisticated register control and morphosyntactic accuracy.

Cambridge A Level Arabic is not a language maintenance course. It demands active literary criticism, precise translation across registers, and extended argumentative writing in Modern Standard Arabic. This section explains where students lose marks and what targeted tuition addresses.
Cambridge A Level Arabic (syllabus 9680) is structured around four high-stakes terminal papers. Papers 1 and 2 form the AS Level stage; Papers 3 and 4 complete the full A Level. Each paper rewards a different skill set: Paper 1 tests comprehension and directed writing using unseen passages, Paper 2 demands summary and translation accuracy, Paper 3 requires comparative literary essay writing on set texts, and Paper 4 combines free composition with a further translation task.
The most common source of mark loss is register confusion, where candidates use colloquial Arabic structures in formal written responses, or fail to match the stylistic register of the source text during translation. A specialist tutor identifies these patterns early and builds targeted correction into every session.
For families in the Gulf, Cambridge A Level Arabic is a strategically important qualification. Universities across the UK, UAE, and KSA recognise it as evidence of advanced academic literacy in Arabic, distinct from spoken proficiency. Students sitting exams via approved Cambridge centres such as the British Council Dubai benefit from tuition that is aligned precisely to the mark scheme command words: analyse, evaluate, assess, and justify.
