MYP Mathematics Framework
IB MYP Mathematics is structured around four assessment criteria: Knowing and Understanding, Investigating Patterns, Communicating, and Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts. Students study across five year groups, with extended and standard pathways available from MYP Year 4 onwards.
Criterion A — Knowing and Understanding: procedural fluency and conceptual recall
Criterion B — Investigating Patterns: conjecture, generalisation, and proof through inquiry
Criterion C — Communicating: mathematical language, notation, and reasoned argument
Criterion D — Applying in Real Life: modelling, interpretation, and justification in context
Standard vs Extended — Two course pathways from MYP Year 4, preparing students for DP Mathematics
Our tutors support all MYP Mathematics strands across Years 1 to 5, including both standard and extended pathways, eAssessment preparation, and progression into IB Diploma Mathematics.
+ interdisciplinary units and modelling tasks supported on request.
MYP Mathematics is assessed on a 1 to 7 scale across four subject-specific criteria. Each criterion is scored out of 8, and scores are combined to produce a final grade from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest).
Top Performers – Grade 7 Award
A Grade 7 in MYP Mathematics requires consistently high scores across all four criteria, demonstrating conceptual understanding, pattern investigation, precise communication, and real-life mathematical application.
The MYP 1 to 7 grading scale shown here applies to IB Middle Years Programme subjects and differs from Cambridge IGCSE, Edexcel, and other qualification frameworks. Speak to your Academic Consultant for guidance specific to your school's MYP grade boundaries.
Our students consistently achieve top grades.

MYP Mathematics is not just about getting the right answer. Students are assessed on how they investigate patterns, communicate reasoning, and apply mathematics to real-life contexts. This section explains what makes each criterion demanding and what targeted 1:1 support changes.
MYP Mathematics assesses four distinct criteria, and each demands a different type of thinking. Criterion A tests procedural knowledge, but Criterion B requires students to form and justify conjectures through open-ended investigation tasks.
Many students find Criterion B the most unfamiliar. Unlike standard problem sets, pattern investigation tasks expect students to design their own approach, identify general rules, and verify them with mathematical reasoning.
Criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, often catches students off guard. They must move fluidly between a real-world scenario and a mathematical model, then interpret and justify their results in plain language.
A 1:1 IB MYP Mathematics tutor works through each criterion separately, identifying exactly where marks are being lost and building the specific skills that the MYP framework rewards. Self-study rarely replicates that precision.

From enquiry to confirmed session
Trusted by Gulf families
Your Academic Consultant reviews your child's current MYP year group, strand, and criterion performance to identify exactly where support is needed before the first session.
We match your child with a tutor who holds a relevant degree and has direct IB MYP Mathematics teaching experience, available Monday to Saturday at Gulf Standard Time.
Sessions are live and 1:1, covering the specific criterion task type your child is working on, whether that is a pattern investigation, a modelling problem, or a summative assessment.
Your parent dashboard tracks progress against each criterion, with your Academic Consultant available to adjust the focus or frequency of sessions at any point.
Our students make measurable progress across all four MYP Mathematics criteria.

MYP Mathematics Standard and Extended both cover the four assessment criteria, but Extended introduces additional content in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus foundations. Extended is the recommended pathway for students planning to take IB Diploma Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level.
MYP Mathematics is assessed against four criteria: Criterion A (Knowing and Understanding), Criterion B (Investigating Patterns), Criterion C (Communicating), and Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts). Each criterion is scored out of 8, and the combined score maps to a final grade from 1 to 7.
A pattern investigation is an extended Criterion B task in which students identify a mathematical pattern, form a conjecture, test it with multiple cases, and attempt to generalise or prove it. These tasks are open-ended and require a structured written response, which is where many students lose marks.
Yes. Our tutors support students preparing for the on-screen MYP Mathematics eAssessment, including both the short-response and extended-response components. Sessions focus on on-screen mathematical communication, time management, and the modelling tasks specific to eAssessment.
Talimat matches students with a vetted, degree-holding tutor in under 10 minutes. Your Academic Consultant confirms the match based on your child's current MYP year group, pathway, and the criteria where support is most needed.
Yes. Our tutors support the MYP to DP transition, helping students consolidate the Extended Mathematics content that underpins DP Mathematics AA and AI. Sessions can be structured to bridge the gap between MYP Year 5 and the start of the DP.
Talimat has over 2,000 vetted tutors across all subjects. Each tutor holds a relevant degree and passes a 14-step vetting process before teaching. Your Academic Consultant identifies tutors with specific IB MYP Mathematics experience for your child's year group.
Every session is live and 1:1. The tutor works on the specific criterion task type or unit topic your child is currently studying, whether that is a modelling problem for Criterion D, a pattern investigation for Criterion B, or procedural practice for Criterion A. Sessions run Monday to Saturday at Gulf Standard Time.
