MYP Design — All Five Years
MYP Design spans Years 1 to 5 and is assessed across four criteria: Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating. Each criterion demands a different set of skills, from research and design specification writing to prototyping and critical reflection.
Criterion A — Inquiring and analysing design problems using a design brief
Criterion B — Developing design ideas through sketching, planning, and specification
Criterion C — Creating solutions and demonstrating technical making or coding skills
Criterion D — Evaluating the product against the design specification and user feedback
Design Cycle — The iterative inquiry framework underpinning all MYP Design tasks
Talimat tutors support all MYP subject groups. Explore live 1:1 sessions across the full Middle Years Programme curriculum, from Design to Diploma preparation.
+ Personal Project support and interdisciplinary learning available on request.
MYP Design uses a criterion-based grading system scored 1 to 7, with 7 as the highest. Each criterion is scored independently and combined to produce a final subject grade.
Top Performers – Grade 7 Award
A Grade 7 in MYP Design requires consistent excellence across all four criteria, demonstrating sophisticated inquiry, creative development, skilled execution, and perceptive evaluation.
The grading scale shown reflects the IB Middle Years Programme and may differ from other IB or non-IB programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for subject- and year-specific guidance.

MYP Design is assessed entirely on criterion-based tasks, not written exams. Students who struggle usually lose marks on Criterion B or D, not because they lack ideas, but because they don't present them in the way the rubric demands. This section explains exactly what changes with a 1:1 tutor.
MYP Design sits within the IB Middle Years Programme framework and is taught across all five MYP years (Grades 6 to 10). It is divided into two branches: Digital Design and Product Design. Both branches are assessed against the same four criteria, but the practical outputs differ significantly.
Criterion A asks students to analyse an existing design problem and justify a design brief. Criterion B requires detailed design sketches, a design specification with measurable success criteria, and a planning document. Criterion C is the making or coding stage. Criterion D asks students to evaluate their finished product against their own specification and gather user feedback.
Most students in GCC schools lose marks on Criterion B because they produce visually appealing sketches without annotating them in terms of function, materials, or user needs. A tutor who knows the MYP Design rubric will identify exactly where marks are being left behind and how to close that gap before the next summative task.
For MYP Year 5 students, the eAssessment option includes an on-screen examination requiring students to respond to unseen design scenarios. Preparation for this requires practise with unfamiliar briefs under timed conditions, which is something a live 1:1 online tutoring session is particularly well suited to.

Trusted by Gulf families
Share your child's MYP year, their current Design teacher's feedback, and which criterion they find hardest. This takes two minutes via our contact form.
Your Academic Consultant reviews the brief and matches your child with a vetted MYP Design tutor, usually within 10 minutes. You can review the tutor's profile before confirming.
Your child joins a free live 1:1 session with their matched tutor. The tutor reviews a recent design task, identifies specific gaps, and outlines a plan.
After the trial, your tutor builds a personalised study plan linked to your child's upcoming summative tasks and criterion targets. Sessions run Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time.
Our tutors work to measurable outcomes, tracked from your child's first session.

Yes. There are no fixed start dates. Your Academic Consultant will review your child's current summative tasks and match them with a tutor who can step in immediately, regardless of where they are in the MYP year.
Sessions focus on the specific criterion costing your child marks. That might mean annotating Criterion B design sketches correctly, structuring a Criterion D evaluation against the design specification, or preparing for an eAssessment scenario.
Yes. Although both branches share the same four criteria, the making process differs. Your tutor will be matched to the branch your child's school follows, whether that is Product Design, Digital Design, or a combined approach.
MYP Design is graded 1 to 7 per subject, with 7 as the highest. Each criterion is scored separately using a descriptor rubric, and the four scores are combined to reach the final grade.
Yes. Many MYP Year 5 students choose a Design-based Personal Project. Talimat tutors can support both the Design subject assessments and the Personal Project's process journal and product development.
Most families receive a confirmed tutor match within 10 minutes of submitting their enquiry. Sessions can begin the same day or the following morning, Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time.
Yes. Tutors covering the Digital Design branch support web design, programming fundamentals, and computational thinking as required by the MYP Design framework for that branch.
Contact your Academic Consultant and a replacement tutor will be arranged promptly. There is no penalty and no disruption to your child's plan.
