AQA A Level Religious Studies — Specification
The AQA A Level Religious Studies specification is examined across two written papers, each worth 50% of the final grade. Students study Philosophy of Religion and Ethics in Paper 1, and a world religion (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, or Hinduism) in Paper 2. Both papers assess AO1 (knowledge and understanding) and AO2 (analysis and evaluation) in equal measure.
Paper 1 — Philosophy of Religion and Ethics: 3 hours, 100 marks, 50% of A Level
Paper 2 — Study of Religion and Dialogues: 3 hours, 100 marks, 50% of A Level
AO1 and AO2 — Each worth 50% across both papers
No coursework — All assessment is written examination

AQA A Level Religious Studies demands sustained philosophical argument, not just accurate recall. Most students who plateau at a C or B grade lose marks on AO2 evaluation, not AO1 knowledge. This section covers what that means in practice and what a 1:1 tutor changes.
The two AQA Religious Studies papers cover a demanding range of material. Paper 1 spans the Philosophy of Religion (including arguments for God's existence, the problem of evil, and religious experience) and Ethics (natural law, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, and sexual ethics). Paper 2 requires deep engagement with a chosen world religion and its dialogues with philosophy, ethics, and society.
What separates a B from an A or A* is not knowing more content. It is the ability to construct a sustained, well-evidenced evaluative argument in response to AQA's command words: "assess", "evaluate", and "critically analyse". A classroom teacher managing thirty students rarely has time to read and mark a student's full practice essays every fortnight.
In a 1:1 online tutoring session, a Talimat tutor can mark a full Paper 1 essay against the AQA mark scheme, identify exactly where the evaluative thread breaks down, and model the kind of paragraph structure that examiners reward. Students in the Gulf sitting AQA A Level Religious Studies through approved exam centres can practise full past-paper conditions and receive detailed written feedback before their next session.
Key takeaways
Every Talimat session is live, 1:1, and built around your child's current AQA Religious Studies paper targets. Here is what the process looks like from first contact to exam day.

Trusted by families across the Gulf
Your Academic Consultant gathers information about your child's current grade, target grade, and which AQA Religious Studies papers they are sitting. This shapes every session from day one.
We match your child to a tutor with a relevant degree and AQA Religious Studies experience. The match happens in under 10 minutes. If the fit isn't right, we rematch at no cost.
Sessions focus on whatever your child needs most: structuring AO2 evaluation arguments, working through the problem of evil, or practising timed Paper 2 responses on their chosen world religion.
As exams approach, sessions shift to past-paper practice, mark-scheme walkthroughs, and timed conditions. Your child arrives at the exam knowing exactly what an AQA examiner wants to see.
Our students arrive with a target grade and leave with a plan. Here is what that looks like in numbers.

Different grades need different approaches. Find where your child is and what comes next.
Your child can already write evaluative arguments. Now we focus on philosophical precision, sustained AO2 threads, and full marks on both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Target A*/aqa-a-level-religious-studiesStrong knowledge, but AO2 evaluation lacks depth. We work on argument structure, use of scholarly views, and the command words AQA examiners reward.
Improve to A/aqa-a-level-religious-studiesContent knowledge is there but essays drift. We rebuild paragraph structure using the AQA mark scheme and practise timed responses on the weaker paper.
Improve to B/aqa-a-level-religious-studiesResit students need targeted work on the specific papers and topics that cost them marks. We identify those quickly and build a focused revision plan.
Plan Your ResitParents and students ask us these questions most often. If yours isn't here, contact us and your Academic Consultant will answer it directly.
Your tutor works through the specific papers your child is sitting. Paper 1 covers Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. Paper 2 covers a chosen world religion and its dialogues. Sessions focus on whichever topics and essays are causing the most difficulty.
Most students see clearer essay structure within three to four sessions. The reason is straightforward: a tutor reads and marks your child's actual work, identifies where the AO2 argument breaks down, and gives direct feedback against the AQA mark scheme.
Yes. Most of our AQA Religious Studies tutors cover both themes in Paper 1 as well as the Paper 2 world religion study. At your first session, your tutor will identify which theme needs the most attention.
Yes. All Talimat sessions are online and available Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time. Students in the UAE, KSA, Oman, and Qatar sit AQA exams through approved centres such as the British Council Dubai.
Talimat is not a registered AQA exam centre. We provide tuition only. Students sit their AQA examinations through approved centres in their country.
AS Level Religious Studies covers one written paper (Philosophy of Religion and Ethics or a world religion study, depending on the centre's choice) and is graded A to E with no A*. A Level covers two full papers and includes the A* grade for outstanding performance.
Talimat matches students with a tutor in under 10 minutes. Your Academic Consultant gathers your child's paper, target grade, and available slot, and confirms the match the same day.
If the tutor match isn't right after the first session, we rematch your child at no cost. There is no enrolment deposit and you can cancel anytime.
