How to improve your AQA A Level Mathematics grade

AQA A Level Mathematics is widely regarded as one of the most demanding A Level choices. The jump from GCSE is steep, the content is cumulative, and Paper 3 mixes Statistics and Mechanics in one sitting. Here is what genuinely moves grades.

The AQA A Level Mathematics specification (7357) covers Pure Mathematics across Papers 1 and 2, then tests Statistics and Mechanics together in Paper 3. Many students find the integration of these three strands in one course the hardest adjustment from GCSE.

Pure Mathematics topics include proof by contradiction, binomial expansion, differentiation and integration techniques, partial fractions, and parametric equations. These build directly on each other. A gap in algebraic manipulation in Year 12 creates compounding problems in calculus by Year 13.

The Statistics component requires familiarity with the AQA pre-release Large Data Set. Exam questions can only be answered confidently if a student has spent time exploring that data set before the exam, something a 1:1 tutor can structure into each session.

Key takeaways

  • Papers 1 and 2 are Pure only; Paper 3 combines Statistics and Mechanics
  • The Large Data Set is examinable; students must engage with it directly
  • Algebraic fluency in Year 12 underpins calculus performance in Year 13
  • A* requires 90% UMS overall and 80% on the Pure papers combined
  • Live 1:1 sessions let tutors diagnose topic gaps and rebuild from the root

My tutor broke down integration by parts in a way my school teacher never had time to. By the third session I was doing past paper questions without panicking.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your questions about AQA A Level Mathematics tutoring

Everything parents and students ask before booking a session with a Talimat AQA Mathematics tutor.

What does an AQA A Level Mathematics tutor cover?

A tutor covers the full specification: Pure Mathematics across Papers 1 and 2 (proof, calculus, trigonometry, algebra, vectors) and Statistics and Mechanics in Paper 3. Sessions are tailored to the student's weakest areas.

How is AQA A Level Mathematics different from AS Level?

AS Level Mathematics (7356) is a standalone qualification covering roughly Year 12 content. A Level (7357) builds on this across two years, with all three papers sat at the end of Year 13. AS results do not count towards the A Level grade.

How much do sessions cost?

AQA A Level Mathematics tutoring starts from AED 65 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and you can cancel anytime with no hidden fees.

Do I need to sit the AQA exam at a specific centre?

Talimat is not a registered exam centre. Students in the Gulf typically sit AQA exams through approved local or international school exam centres. Contact us and your Academic Consultant will advise on options in your city.

What is the AQA Large Data Set and do tutors cover it?

The Large Data Set is a pre-release data resource students must engage with before Paper 3. AQA publishes it in advance of the exam series. Our tutors incorporate it into Statistics sessions so students can answer contextual questions with confidence.

How quickly can we start sessions?

You can be matched with a qualified AQA Mathematics tutor in under 10 minutes. Sessions run Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time, so a first lesson can often happen the same day.

Can tutors help with both Pure and Applied topics?

Yes. Most Talimat AQA Mathematics tutors are comfortable across all three strands. If your child needs very focused Mechanics support, your Academic Consultant will match them with a tutor who has particular strength in applied mathematics.

What grade does a student need for the A* in AQA A Level Mathematics?

The A* requires a minimum of 90% on the uniform mark scale overall, combined with at least 80% on the aggregate of Papers 1 and 2. It is awarded only at A Level, not at AS Level.
