Edexcel A Level Law (9LW0) is more demanding than most students expect. The jump from GCSE to A Level requires sustained legal reasoning, not just knowledge recall. This section explains where students struggle and what targeted 1:1 tutoring changes.
The Pearson Edexcel 9LW0 specification tests students across three linear papers. Paper 1 covers the English legal system and criminal law. Paper 2 covers the law of tort and a chosen optional topic.
Paper 3 is the synoptic paper, requiring students to apply principles from across both papers to an unseen scenario.
Many students lose marks not because they lack knowledge but because they apply legal rules without precise structure.
Examiners consistently flag weak application of the IRAC framework (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion) as the primary reason candidates fall from grade A to grade C.
A specialist Edexcel A Level Law tutor works through past paper questions at the 9LW0 level, drilling command words such as 'evaluate', 'assess' and 'discuss' so students know exactly what depth each question demands.
Online tutoring with Talimat means sessions fit around school schedules, Monday to Saturday, in Gulf Standard Time.
Key takeaways
Talimat tutors are fluent in both Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge A Level specifications. Your tutor is matched to the exact board your school uses.
Cambridge Assessment International Education
Cambridge Law examines contract alongside tort, where Edexcel pairs tort with a centre-chosen optional topic. Knowing which optional topic your school has actually selected changes the whole revision plan from the start.

Specification 9LW0 — Linear A Level
The Pearson Edexcel 9LW0 A Level Law specification spans the English legal system, criminal law, tort law, and a synoptic paper. Each component carries equal weighting and is assessed through terminal examinations at the end of Year 13. There is no coursework.
Paper 1 (9LW0/01) — The English legal system and criminal law. 33.3% of total A Level.
Paper 2 (9LW0/02) — Law of tort plus one optional topic. 33.3% of total A Level.
Paper 3 (9LW0/03) — Synoptic paper applying principles across all topics. 33.3% of total A Level.
AS Level (8LW0) — Standalone qualification. Does not count towards the final A Level grade.
No NEA or coursework — All assessment is through linear terminal examinations.
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level Law uses a five-grade letter scale from A to E. Grade A is the highest attainable. There is no A* grade at A Level.
Top Performers – Grade A Award
Grade A at Edexcel A Level Law requires sustained evaluative legal reasoning, precise application of authority, and synoptic command across all three linear papers.
All three 9LW0 papers carry exactly equal weight, so a single weak component costs roughly a third of the total mark. Speak to your Talimat Academic Consultant about balancing preparation across all three.

Each card maps to a specific 9LW0 component. Pick the paper where your student is dropping marks.
Covers the courts, sources of law, statutory interpretation, judicial precedent, and core criminal law offences including actus reus, mens rea, and the main offences against the person.
Covers negligence, occupiers' liability, nuisance, and vicarious liability alongside one optional topic. Students must structure 25-mark essay answers using precise authority and evaluative command.
The most challenging component. Students apply principles from Papers 1 and 2 to an unseen scenario. Examiner reports consistently flag weak synoptic reasoning as the key differentiator at grade boundaries.
DIFFERENT EXAM BOARD?
Straight answers on the 9LW0 specification, our tutors, and how sessions work.
The specification covers three equal components: Paper 1 (English legal system and criminal law), Paper 2 (law of tort plus one optional topic), and Paper 3 (synoptic application across both). All assessment is by terminal examination at the end of Year 13.
Yes. Pearson Edexcel AS Level Law (8LW0) is a standalone qualification. It does not count towards the final A Level grade. Students who sit AS Level and then continue to A Level are assessed entirely on their Year 13 terminal papers.
Paper 3 is the synoptic component. It presents an unseen scenario requiring students to draw on legal principles from across Papers 1 and 2. Examiners consistently report that candidates who have not practised cross-topic application struggle to access the higher mark bands.
All Talimat tutors hold a relevant degree in their subject area and pass a 14-step vetting process. For A Level Law, tutors hold law degrees or equivalent legal qualifications and are familiar with the Pearson Edexcel 9LW0 mark schemes.
Tutoring starts from AED 65 per hour, with no deposit and no hidden fees. Law students usually increase frequency once Paper 3 practice begins.
Yes. Students in the GCC can sit Pearson Edexcel A Level examinations through approved exam centres. Talimat is not itself an exam centre but supports students in identifying and preparing for their local sitting. Contact us for guidance specific to your country.
Matching takes under 10 minutes. For Law we check that the tutor covers your centre's chosen Paper 2 optional topic, since that selection varies between schools and changes the shape of the whole revision plan.
Yes. Mock exams using real past papers from the 9LW0 series are available as part of the tutoring programme. Your tutor provides written feedback aligned to the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme, so your child knows exactly how to improve before the live examination.
