Cambridge Lower Secondary Physical Education covers far more than sport. Students must demonstrate movement skills, tactical understanding, health knowledge, and the ability to analyse and improve performance across Stages 7 to 9. This page explains what makes it challenging and how a tutor helps.
The Cambridge Lower Secondary PE curriculum is built around four interconnected strands: Physical Skills and Techniques, Health and Fitness, Tactics, Strategies, and Compositional Ideas, and Evaluating and Improving.
Students are expected not only to participate physically but to observe, describe, and analyse movement. At Stage 9, learners must evaluate their own and others' performance using subject-specific vocabulary such as 'force application', 'spatial awareness', and 'tactical decision-making'.
For students at international schools in the GCC following the Cambridge pathway, PE feeds directly into Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education, where written components and coursework demand the same analytical skills introduced at Lower Secondary level.
Key takeaways
Cambridge Lower Secondary PE is assessed by CAIE. Talimat also supports students on Edexcel-aligned lower secondary programmes where applicable.

Cambridge Lower Secondary PE — Stages 7, 8 and 9
The Cambridge Lower Secondary PE curriculum progresses through Physical Skills and Techniques, Health and Fitness, Tactics and Strategies, and Evaluating and Improving. Each stage builds on the last, culminating in a Checkpoint assessment at Stage 9 that tests both practical knowledge and written analytical skills.
Physical Skills and Techniques — Fundamental movement, sport-specific skills, and technique refinement across Stages 7, 8, and 9.
Health and Fitness — Understanding of fitness components, training principles, and the relationship between physical activity and long-term wellbeing.
Tactics, Strategies, and Compositional Ideas — Applying game plans, movement sequences, and group strategies in competitive and cooperative contexts.
Evaluating and Improving — Using observation and subject vocabulary to analyse performance and suggest structured improvements.
Cambridge Checkpoint Assessment — End-of-Stage 9 assessment measuring knowledge, understanding, and application across all four strands.
Cambridge Lower Secondary uses a four-level scale. Students are awarded S4 (the highest level) through to S1, with Checkpoint results reported against each strand of the curriculum.
Top Performers – Level S4 Award
Level S4 is awarded to students who demonstrate a thorough and consistent understanding of all four PE strands, with strong analytical and evaluative written responses at Stage 9.
This grading scale applies to the Cambridge Lower Secondary (iLowerSecondary) Checkpoint assessment and may differ from other Cambridge or Pearson programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance.

Quick, honest answers to the questions we hear most often from families in the Gulf.
Yes. The written Checkpoint component tests analytical and evaluative skills that many students underestimate. A tutor ensures your child can describe, explain, and evaluate performance using the correct Cambridge vocabulary, not just participate physically.
Sessions cover all four curriculum strands: Physical Skills and Techniques, Health and Fitness, Tactics and Strategies, and Evaluating and Improving. The tutor prioritises the strand your child finds hardest and builds up from there.
Absolutely. Tutors work through past Checkpoint-style questions, practise command-word responses ('describe', 'explain', 'analyse'), and help students structure written answers clearly and accurately.
Not at all. Building correct movement vocabulary and health literacy at Stage 7 makes Stages 8 and 9 significantly easier. Early support prevents gaps from forming rather than closing them later.
Every tutor holds a relevant degree in their subject area and passes a 14-step vetting process before joining the platform. Tutors supporting Cambridge Lower Secondary PE have specific knowledge of the CAIE framework for Stages 7 to 9.
Sessions for Grade 7 to 8 students start from AED 30 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and you can cancel anytime. Speak to your Academic Consultant for a personalised recommendation.
Yes. The written, analytical, and health knowledge components of Cambridge Lower Secondary PE are well suited to online 1:1 sessions. Tutors use video analysis, annotated diagrams, and Cambridge-aligned resources to make sessions practical and engaging.
The Cambridge Lower Secondary programme is set by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). Assessment includes a Checkpoint test at Stage 9, reported against all four curriculum strands.
