AQA GCSE Science — Spec at a Glance
AQA GCSE Science runs across three disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Combined Science students sit six papers (two per subject, 1 hour 15 minutes each) at Foundation or Higher tier. Triple Science students sit the same structure but each subject awards a separate 9-1 grade. Required practicals are examined within written papers.
Paper 1 vs Paper 2 — Each science subject splits cleanly: Paper 1 covers the first half of the spec, Paper 2 the second. Knowing which topics fall where is essential revision strategy.
Foundation and Higher tiers — Foundation awards grades 1-5; Higher awards grades 4-9. Tier entry must be confirmed before the exam window opens.
Required practicals — AQA embeds 21 required practicals across the three sciences. Questions on method, variables, and data analysis appear in every paper.
Combined vs Triple — Combined Science (Trilogy or Synergy) awards a double grade (e.g. 6-6). Triple Science awards three separate grades and carries more content.
Command words — 'Describe', 'explain', 'evaluate', and 'calculate' carry different mark allocations. Students who misread the command word lose marks they already know.
Talimat tutors cover the full range of AQA GCSE subjects. Whether your child needs help with Science, Maths, or Humanities, we have a matched specialist ready.

AQA GCSE Science uses the 9-1 numerical scale, where 9 is the highest grade achievable. Grade 4 is the standard pass; grade 5 is the strong pass used by many sixth forms and employers.
Top Performers: Grade 9 Award
Grade 9 in AQA GCSE Science requires consistently accurate extended answers, confident use of required practical data, and full marks on the higher-tier calculation questions.
The 9-1 scale shown applies to AQA GCSE qualifications. Grading scales differ across other boards and programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance.

AQA GCSE Science covers a large amount of content across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and students lose marks in predictable places. This section covers the highest-risk topics, how 1:1 tutoring addresses them, and what focused preparation realistically achieves.
The AQA GCSE Science specification is split into Combined and Triple pathways. Combined Science (Trilogy or Synergy) is the most common route and awards a double grade. Triple Science students cover additional content in each discipline and receive three separate grades.
In Biology, students consistently lose marks on Cell Biology (mitosis vs meiosis distinctions), Bioenergetics (photosynthesis and respiration calculations), and extended 'evaluate' questions in Ecology. In Chemistry, mole calculations, the rate of reaction required practicals, and organic chemistry mechanisms account for a large share of Paper 2 marks. In Physics, the most common mark losses come from circuit calculations, wave behaviour, and the six-mark 'describe and explain' questions on energy stores and transfers.
A 1:1 tutor identifies precisely which required practicals a student cannot explain from memory, which command words they misread under pressure, and which formulae they have not committed to the equation sheet versus those they must recall. That targeting is simply not possible in a classroom of 30. Students preparing for online tutoring on the AQA spec also benefit from working through past paper mark schemes with a tutor who can explain exactly why an answer scores two marks instead of four.
Key takeaways
Every student starts with a diagnostic session. From there, your tutor builds a session plan around the AQA Science papers you are sitting, your tier, and the topics where marks are being lost.

Trusted by Gulf families
Share your child's current grade, target grade, exam tier (Foundation or Higher), and whether they are taking Combined or Triple Science. This takes five minutes and shapes everything that follows.
We match you with a vetted AQA Science specialist within minutes. Your first session is free. The tutor reviews past paper performance before the session begins.
Every live 1:1 session is structured around the AQA spec: required practicals, command word practice, paper 1 and paper 2 topic coverage, and timed exam question work. Nothing generic.
Your Academic Consultant reviews progress monthly. If a topic is still not sticking, the session plan adjusts. Parents access the dashboard to see session notes and topic coverage.
Our tutors track topic-by-topic progress across all three AQA Science disciplines. Here is what the data shows.

Yes. Foundation and Higher tier are treated as distinct preparation paths. Your tutor will focus on the grades 1-5 boundary content, the command words most common at Foundation, and the required practicals examined on both papers.
You tell us the subject, tier, current grade, and target grade. We match you with a vetted specialist within minutes. Every tutor holds a relevant degree and has passed a 14-step vetting process.
Talimat tutors are available Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time. Evening and weekend slots are available to fit around school schedules across the UAE, KSA, Qatar, and Oman.
All sessions are live and 1:1. Session notes are saved to the parent dashboard. Talimat does not offer pre-recorded or asynchronous lessons.
We can arrange separate tutors for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, or match your child with a Combined Science specialist who covers all three under one session plan.
Your Academic Consultant reviews progress regularly and updates the session plan. Parents can track topic coverage and session notes through the Talimat parent dashboard at any time.
