AQA GCSE Chemistry — Specification 8462
AQA GCSE Chemistry (8462) is assessed across Paper 1 and Paper 2, each worth 50% of the final grade. Both papers run for 1 hour 45 minutes and carry 100 marks. Higher and Foundation tiers are available, with overlapping content at grades 4 and 5.
Paper 1 — Atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, and energy changes.
Paper 2 — Rate and extent of chemical change, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, chemistry of the atmosphere, and using resources.
Required Practicals — Eight required practicals that can be assessed through written questions on either paper.
Tiering — Foundation tier targets grades 1–5; Higher tier targets grades 4–9. Grade 3 is available on the Foundation paper.
Maths Skills — At least 20% of marks across both papers assess mathematical skills, including Avogadro's constant, mole calculations, and concentration.
Talimat tutors cover the full suite of AQA GCSE subjects, from the sciences and mathematics to humanities and languages, with every session live and 1:1.
+ additional AQA GCSE subjects available on request.
AQA GCSE Chemistry uses the 9 to 1 numerical scale, where 9 is the highest grade. Grade 4 is considered a standard pass and grade 5 a strong pass.
Top Performers – Grade 9 Award
A grade 9 on AQA GCSE Chemistry requires consistent mastery across both papers, including Higher-tier only content and extended calculation questions.
The 9 to 1 scale shown here is specific to AQA GCSE qualifications and may differ from Cambridge IGCSE, IB, or other programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific grade boundary guidance.

AQA GCSE Chemistry rewards students who understand the reasoning behind reactions, not just the facts. A 1:1 tutor closes the gap between classroom exposure and genuine exam readiness. Here is what that looks like in practice.
AQA GCSE Chemistry (specification 8462) sits within the sciences at GCSE level and is taken either as a standalone Triple Science subject or as part of Combined Science: Trilogy. The distinction matters: Triple Science students sit six papers across Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, while Combined Science students sit two Chemistry papers weighted at one-third of their combined grade.
For families in the GCC following a British curriculum school programme, understanding which route your child is on changes the revision strategy entirely. A Higher-tier Chemistry student working towards grade 7 to 9 needs targeted work on mole calculations, rates of reaction graphs, and the organic chemistry section of Paper 2.
One area that consistently loses marks is the required practicals. AQA can test any of the eight required practicals in written form on either paper. Students who have not practised writing up method, identifying variables, and evaluating anomalous results often drop marks here even when their content knowledge is strong.

Clear answers about the AQA Chemistry specification, our tutors, and how sessions work.
AQA GCSE Chemistry (8462) is a standalone Triple Science qualification assessed by two full papers. Combined Science: Trilogy includes Chemistry content but shares a combined grade across all three sciences. Triple Science students receive a separate Chemistry grade on the 9–1 scale.
Paper 1 covers atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding and structure, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, and energy changes. Paper 2 covers rate and extent of change, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, the atmosphere, and using resources.
AQA does not award a separate practical endorsement at GCSE. Instead, required practical skills are assessed through written questions that can appear on either Paper 1 or Paper 2. Your tutor will cover all eight required practicals in written question format.
Higher tier introduces additional content and deeper mathematical demands, including equilibrium expressions, more complex mole calculations, and extended organic chemistry. Grades 4 and 5 overlap between tiers, but the Higher paper targets grades 4 through 9 and includes Higher-only questions.
We match students with a qualified AQA Chemistry tutor in under 10 minutes. Sessions run Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time, and your Academic Consultant will confirm your first slot the same day you enquire.
AQA GCSE Chemistry tutoring starts from AED 50 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and you can cancel at any time with no hidden fees.
Six-mark questions appear on both papers and reward students who write in a logical, connected sequence using correct chemical terminology. Your tutor will practise these using AQA mark schemes, teaching you how to structure answers to meet all the marking points.
Every AQA Chemistry tutor on Talimat holds a relevant degree and is screened through a 14-step vetting process. Sessions are planned around specification 8462, covering the exact topic list, command words, and paper structure that AQA uses.
