IELTS Academic and General Training
IELTS is scored across Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, each marked on a 0-9 band scale and averaged into an overall band. SABIS High School students sit IELTS Academic for university entry. Most Gulf universities require a minimum overall band of 5.5 to 6.5.
Listening — 40 questions across four recorded sections, including monologues and conversations in academic and everyday contexts.
Reading — Three long passages with 40 questions testing skimming, scanning, inference, and vocabulary in context.
Writing — Task 1 requires a 150-word data description; Task 2 requires a 250-word academic argument essay.
Speaking — A three-part face-to-face interview testing fluency, coherence, lexical resource, and grammatical range.
Band Scale — Scores run from 0 (did not attempt) to 9 (expert user), reported in 0.5 increments.
Talimat tutors support SABIS High School students across IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge IGCSE subjects. Every session is live, 1:1, and personalised to your current SABIS level.
+ additional English and test-prep subjects available on request.
IELTS uses a 9-band grading system. Each of the four skills is scored from 0 to 9, with the overall band score averaged from all four components and reported in 0.5 increments.
Top Performers - Band 9 Award
Achieving band 9 in IELTS Academic requires consistent expert-level English across all four components, with near-flawless grammar, extensive vocabulary, and fully coherent extended writing.
The IELTS band scale shown here applies to the IELTS Academic and General Training examinations and differs from Cambridge IGCSE, Edexcel, IB, and other qualification scales. Speak to your Academic Consultant for guidance specific to your target university or programme.

IELTS is not simply an English test. It measures four distinct academic language skills, each requiring a different approach. This section explains what makes IELTS genuinely difficult for SABIS High School students and what targeted 1:1 tutoring changes.
IELTS Academic tests listening, reading, writing, and speaking in ways that differ significantly from classroom English taught within the SABIS Educational System. A student who performs well in SABIS English lessons may still struggle with the timed, task-specific demands of IELTS.
Writing Task 2 requires students to construct a coherent, evidence-supported argument in 250 words within 40 minutes. The SABIS Point System builds foundational grammar and vocabulary, but the specific essay structures rewarded by IELTS examiners, such as discuss-both-views or problem-solution formats, need targeted practice.
IELTS online tutoring with Talimat focuses on the exact task types that appear in the exam. A tutor works through authentic Cambridge IELTS practice papers, identifies the student's weakest band components, and builds a session plan around measurable improvement in that component before moving on.
