Two papers. One linear qualification. Every mark counts.
According to the Pearson Edexcel specification (Issue 3, September 2024), all 4BI1 candidates sit two externally-assessed written papers in the same exam series. Paper 1 carries the larger share of marks; Paper 2 tests the full specification including the higher-demand bold statements.

How to Choose the Right 4BI1 Biology Tutor
Picking a tutor is not simply a matter of finding someone who knows biology. The specification has a precise paper structure, split between AO1, AO2, and AO3 marks, distinction between standard content and the higher-demand bold statements tested in Paper 2.
Match the Tutor to the Exact Specification
The Pearson Edexcel 4BI1 specification differs from Cambridge IGCSE Biology in structure, command words, and mark-scheme language.
A tutor who has only prepared students for Cambridge 0610 will not automatically know that Paper 2 targets the bold 'B' reference statements, or that AO3 experimental questions appear across both papers rather than in a separate practical component.
Ask directly: which exam board and paper code have you tutored? A tutor who can name the paper codes, the AO weightings, and the distinction between Paper 1 and Paper 2 content has the specification knowledge your child needs.
Check How the Tutor Uses Session Time
Biology at IGCSE level rewards students who can apply knowledge, not just recall it. AO2 accounts for up to 42% of the total mark in 4BI1, meaning a tutor who only drills definitions is leaving nearly half the marks unaddressed.
Effective sessions for 4BI1 should include:
- Structured recall of core content for AO1
- Exam-style application questions for AO2
- Data interpretation and experimental analysis for AO3
Ask to see a sample session plan. If it is all notes and no questions, that is a warning sign.
Assess Progress Visibility for Parents
A tutor who reports back only at parents' evenings is not enough when exam series run in November and June. Parents of 4BI1 students need to know, week by week, which of the five topics have been covered, where gaps remain, and whether the student is building confidence on Paper 2's higher-demand content.
Talimat's parent dashboard shows session notes, topic progress, and upcoming focus areas after every lesson. An Academic Consultant is assigned from day one to coordinate the plan. Visibility is not a luxury; it is how you catch a gap before it becomes a grade.
“Our tutor knew the Edexcel spec inside out. She focused on the Paper 2 content that my son kept avoiding, and his confidence in Biology completely changed.”
