IB DP Philosophy is one of the most writing-intensive subjects in the Diploma Programme. Success depends on argumentation, not memory. This section explains why students struggle, what a specialist tutor changes, and what you can realistically expect.
IB Philosophy is assessed almost entirely through extended writing. Paper 1 asks students to analyse an unseen stimulus text using philosophical concepts, identifying arguments, assumptions, and implications under timed conditions.
Paper 2 requires sustained essay responses on two optional themes. HL students also sit Paper 3, which demands close engagement with a prescribed non-Western philosophical text. Each paper rewards a precise, structured approach.
The Internal Assessment is a 1,600-word philosophical analysis of a real-life situation. It is not a general essay. It requires students to select an appropriate philosophical lens, apply it rigorously, and demonstrate awareness of counterarguments.
A specialist IB Philosophy tutor works through your specific optional themes with you, practises Paper 1 unseen text technique session by session, and helps you build the kind of structured argumentation that examiners reward with a 6 or 7.

HL students complete three external papers and the Internal Assessment. SL students complete two external papers and the IA. The key HL addition is Paper 3, which requires philosophical analysis of a prescribed non-Western text not studied at SL.
The IA is a 1,600-word philosophical analysis of a real-life situation. It is internally assessed by your teacher and externally moderated by the IB. Marks are awarded for the identification of a genuine philosophical issue and the rigour of the philosophical analysis applied.
Optional themes include Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Epistemology, Philosophy of Art, and Philosophy of Science, among others. Students study two optional themes, and Paper 2 requires extended essay responses drawing on both.
Yes. Paper 1 is a skill, not just knowledge. A specialist tutor will work through past Paper 1 stimuli with you, building your ability to identify philosophical arguments, reconstruct them clearly, and evaluate them under timed conditions.
