AQA A Level French — Specification 7652
AQA A Level French (7652) is assessed across three externally marked papers plus a spoken performance. Paper 1 tests Listening, Reading, and Writing. Paper 2 tests Writing in French on literary and film texts. Paper 3 is the Speaking exam. Each component carries significant weight toward the final A to E grade.
Paper 1 (Listening, Reading, Writing) — 50% of A Level; 2 hours 30 minutes; tests comprehension, translation, and essay writing in French
Paper 2 (Writing) — 20% of A Level; 2 hours; one essay on a studied film and one on a studied literary text, both written in French
Paper 3 (Speaking) — 30% of A Level; conducted by the student's teacher, externally marked by AQA; includes a stimulus card discussion and an individual research project presentation
Set texts and films — Students study one text and one film from the AQA prescribed list, e.g. Laclos's Les Liaisons dangereuses or Renoir's La Règle du jeu
AS Level (7652) — A separate standalone qualification; Papers 1 and 2 only, no A* available, graded A to E
Talimat tutors support students across the full range of AQA AS and A Level subjects, with live 1:1 sessions tailored to each specification.

AQA A Level French is graded A to E. There is no A* at A Level. AS Level French (7651) follows the same A to E scale as a separate standalone qualification.

AQA A Level French demands accuracy in extended written French, close reading of authentic texts, and a confident live speaking performance. This page covers what makes each paper difficult and what a 1:1 tutor changes.
Paper 1 alone accounts for 50% of the final grade. Students must listen to native-speed French audio, answer comprehension questions in English and French, translate a passage into English, and write a 240-word-plus essay in French.
The jump from GCSE is steep. At GCSE, students can rely on familiar vocabulary banks. At A Level, AQA expects students to engage with abstract themes: l'immigration et la société multiculturelle, la politique et la vie politique, and the environment. Vocabulary and register must reflect that complexity.
Paper 2 tests two pieces of extended writing in French, one on a prescribed film and one on a prescribed literary text. Students studying Les Liaisons dangereuses or La Règle du jeu need both the linguistic confidence to write analytically in French and genuine textual knowledge to construct an argument.
Paper 3, the Speaking exam, is marked by AQA externally. The Individual Research Project requires students to speak for approximately two minutes on a topic they have chosen and researched independently, then answer unpredictable follow-up questions from their teacher. That combination of preparation and spontaneity is where many students lose marks.
A 1:1 AQA A Level French tutor can run mock speaking sessions, provide written feedback on Paper 2 essays, drill Paper 1 translation technique, and hold sessions in French to build spoken fluency. Self-study and classroom preparation rarely replicate that range.

Yes. Tutors run live mock speaking sessions in French via video call, replicating the Paper 3 format. Students receive verbal and written feedback on fluency, accuracy, and argument structure. Many students find online mock sessions less intimidating than face-to-face practice.
A tutor can explain the demands of each text and film on the AQA prescribed list and advise on which pairing suits your child's French level and interests. The final choice is the school's decision, but a tutor can prepare your child for any combination.
Yes. AQA AS Level French (7651) covers Paper 1 and Paper 2 only, and our tutors know the AS specification as a standalone qualification. Sessions are tailored to the AS papers, not the full A Level structure.
Most A Level French students benefit from one or two sessions per week. In the final six weeks before exams, many increase to three sessions to cover all three papers. Your Academic Consultant will recommend a schedule based on current performance and exam dates.
Yes. Our French tutors work from the current AQA specification and are familiar with the prescribed film and literature list. Sessions on Paper 2 are built around the specific text and film your child is studying.
AQA A Level French (7652) includes all three papers and is graded A to E. AS Level French (7651) is a standalone qualification covering Papers 1 and 2 only, also graded A to E, with no A* available at either level. AS results do not count toward the A Level grade.
Tutor matching typically takes under 10 minutes from the point of sign-up. Sessions are available Monday to Saturday at Gulf Standard Time, so your child can usually have a first session within 24 to 48 hours of booking.
AQA A Level French carries significant weight in university applications, particularly for students targeting Russell Group or top European universities. A single grade improvement changes predicted grades and UCAS points. The investment is in the outcome, not just the hours.
