Edexcel A Level Mathematics (9MA0) demands fluency across Pure, Statistics, and Mechanics simultaneously. This section covers where students lose marks, what a specialist tutor changes, and what realistic progress looks like.
The 9MA0 specification is examined across three terminal papers: Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics, 2 hours), Paper 2 (Pure Mathematics, 2 hours), and Paper 3 (Statistics and Mechanics, 2 hours).
Each paper carries one third of the total A Level grade. A weak Paper 3 cannot be rescued by strong Pure scores alone, which is why balanced preparation across all three components is essential.
A specialist Edexcel A Level Mathematics tutor addresses the specific gaps that classroom teaching rarely has time to close: proof by contradiction, parametric equations, integration by parts, hypothesis testing using the binomial distribution, and resolving forces on inclined planes.
Key takeaways
Talimat tutors are experienced across Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge qualifications. Every session is mapped to the exact specification your child is sitting.
Pearson Edexcel GCE AS and A Level
Pearson Edexcel is one of the UK's largest awarding bodies. The GCE A Level Mathematics specification (9MA0) is recognised by every UK university and accepted by institutions across the GCC, North America, and beyond for undergraduate admissions.

Specification 9MA0 — Linear A Level
The 9MA0 specification covers Pure Mathematics across Papers 1 and 2, then tests Statistics and Mechanics in a combined Paper 3. All three are terminal examinations sat in the summer series. AS Level (8MA0) is a separate, standalone qualification and does not contribute to the final A Level grade.
Paper 1 — Pure Mathematics — Proof, algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry, and vectors. 100 marks, 2 hours.
Paper 2 — Pure Mathematics — Continuation of all Pure topics with extended problem-solving and unfamiliar contexts. 100 marks, 2 hours.
Paper 3 — Statistics and Mechanics — Section A: statistical sampling, data presentation, probability, the Normal distribution, hypothesis testing. Section B: kinematics, forces, Newton's Laws, moments. 100 marks, 2 hours.
AS Level (8MA0) — Standalone qualification. Papers cover Pure content and either Statistics or Mechanics. Graded A to E; no A* available at AS.
Large Data Set (LDS) — Pearson-issued dataset used in Paper 3 Statistics questions. Familiarity with the LDS is mandatory — exam questions assume prior engagement with it.
The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level uses a five-grade letter scale from A to E. An A* is awarded to candidates who achieve a grade A overall and score 90% or more across the combined Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks.
Top Performers — Grade A Award
A Grade A in 9MA0 requires sustained accuracy across all three papers, strong algebraic manipulation in Pure, and confident application of statistical and mechanical models in Paper 3.
The grade scale shown is specific to Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level and may differ from other Pearson or Cambridge programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance on grade boundaries.

DIFFERENT EXAM BOARD?
Straight answers to the questions families ask most before starting Edexcel A Level Mathematics tutoring with Talimat.
9MA0 is the full Edexcel GCE A Level Mathematics qualification, assessed by three terminal papers sat at the end of Year 13. 8MA0 is the AS Level, a standalone qualification with two papers sat at the end of Year 12. The AS Level grade does not count towards the A Level grade under the linear structure.
Yes. Talimat has no fixed enrolment dates. A family can begin any week of the academic year. Your Academic Consultant will assess which 9MA0 topics need the most urgent attention and build a study plan from there.
Most families receive a confirmed tutor match in under 10 minutes from their initial enquiry. Sessions can typically be scheduled within 24 hours of that match.
Yes. Edexcel-specialist Mathematics tutors are familiar with the Pearson-issued Large Data Set and build specific sessions around the types of LDS questions that appear in Section A of Paper 3, including data interpretation and hypothesis testing tasks that reference the dataset.
A Level sessions start from AED 65 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and no hidden fees. You can cancel at any time.
Yes. Talimat tutors support both 9MA0 and the Edexcel Further Mathematics specification. If a student is sitting both qualifications, sessions can be coordinated to cover shared content efficiently across both papers.
All Talimat sessions are live and 1:1. Sessions are not pre-recorded or asynchronous. Progress notes from each session are logged and visible to parents via the parent dashboard.
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level Mathematics is accepted by all UK universities and is recognised internationally, including institutions across the GCC, North America, Australia, and Europe. UCAS tariff points are awarded on the same A* to E scale as all other GCE A Level qualifications.
