IB DP Language A: Language and Literature
Language A: Language and Literature spans four areas of exploration at both SL and HL: Readers, Writers, and Texts; Time and Space; Intertextuality. Students sit two external papers and complete an Individual Oral. HL adds a Higher Level Essay. Every component rewards precision and practice.
Paper 1 — Guided analysis of one or two unseen non-literary texts, SL and HL respectively.
Paper 2 — Comparative essay on two literary works from the body of works studied.
Individual Oral — 15-minute oral exploring a global issue across one literary and one non-literary text.
Higher Level Essay — HL only: an independent 1,200-1,500 word essay on a literary or language topic.
Areas of Exploration — Three conceptual lenses structuring how texts, contexts, and language interact.

IB Language A: Language and Literature is one of the most demanding Group 1 subjects precisely because it tests two distinct skill sets: close linguistic analysis and comparative literary interpretation. This section covers what makes each component difficult and what targeted 1:1 support changes.
Paper 1 asks students to analyse unseen texts without any prior preparation beyond the skills they have built across the course. At HL, students receive two texts and must write a guided analysis of both, identifying how language, structure, and context shape meaning.
Paper 2 requires a comparative essay written under timed conditions on two works from the student's body of works. The challenge is not just knowing the texts but constructing a coherent argument that treats both works as equally important, using specific textual evidence under exam pressure.
The Individual Oral is a 15-minute assessment in which students present a prepared extract and then respond to examiner questions. It demands rehearsal, a clearly articulated global issue, and the ability to connect a literary and a non-literary text with genuine insight.
HL students also complete a Higher Level Essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words on a topic of their choosing. This is an opportunity many students underuse because the open-ended brief feels unfamiliar after structured class tasks.
A 1:1 IB tutor works through each of these components with the student's actual texts and drafted responses. Unlike classroom time, every session focuses on the specific mark-scheme criteria where that student is losing points.

Language and Literature includes both literary and non-literary texts across all components, covering areas such as advertising, journalism, and speeches alongside novels and plays. Literature focuses exclusively on literary works. The two subjects share the same assessment structure but differ significantly in the range of texts studied.
Yes. When you book, you share your body of works and your current drafts. Your tutor prepares sessions around your actual texts and exam board requirements, not a generic list.
At SL, students analyse one unseen non-literary text using guided questions. At HL, students receive two unseen texts and must produce a comparative guided analysis, which demands greater skill in managing two sources simultaneously.
Students present for 10 minutes on a prepared extract and global issue, linking one literary and one non-literary text studied in class. An examiner then asks follow-up questions for 5 minutes. Rehearsal with structured feedback is the most effective preparation.
Yes. HL students submit a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay on a literary or language topic of their own choosing. It carries a significant weighting and benefits from early planning and several rounds of tutor feedback.
Talimat matches students with a suitable tutor in under 10 minutes. Your Academic Consultant confirms the match and schedules your first free trial session at a time that suits your family.
Yes. Talimat tutors support Language A: Language and Literature at both Standard Level and Higher Level, including all external papers and the Individual Oral.
Comparative and analytical essay structure is one of the most common areas where IB Language A students lose marks. Your tutor can focus entire sessions on argument construction, paragraph coherence, and embedding textual evidence under timed conditions.
