IB DP Film Guide — HL and SL
IB DP Film assesses students across textual analysis, film theory, solo or collaborative filmmaking, and comparative study. HL adds a fourth task and a deeper research requirement. Every component rewards precision in film terminology and command of IB assessment objectives.
Textual Analysis (TA) — A written and oral close analysis of an unseen film extract, assessed externally at both SL and HL.
Comparative Study (CS) — An independently researched essay comparing two or more films from different countries or time periods. HL only.
Film Portfolio (FP) — A production journal and finished short film or trailer. Students take defined production roles at SL; HL adds additional responsibilities.
Collaborative Film Project (CFP) — A short film produced as a team, with individual written commentary on the production process. Assessed internally at SL and HL.
HL vs SL — HL students complete all four components; SL students complete the TA, CFP, and FP. HL also carries a higher weighting on the Comparative Study.

The choice between IB Film HL and SL affects both workload and assessment design. HL students complete four components including the Comparative Study; SL students complete three. This section explains what each path demands and what a 1:1 tutor changes.
IB Film HL requires students to produce a written Comparative Study of at least 2,000 words, analysing films from different countries or time periods using film theory and subject-specific terminology. This component has no equivalent at SL.
At SL, the three components are the Textual Analysis, the Collaborative Film Project, and the Film Portfolio. Each demands a distinct set of skills: close reading of film language, practical production, and reflective writing on process and role.
A 1:1 IB Film tutor can work on all of these simultaneously, adjusting session focus as deadlines shift. Self-study struggles here because the subject requires feedback on written drafts, production commentary, and oral presentation technique that a classroom rarely has time to provide individually.

Questions parents and students ask us before booking their first IB Film session.
An IB Film tutor works on the specific components your child is assessed on: Textual Analysis technique, Comparative Study essay structure, Film Portfolio journal writing, and Collaborative Film Project commentary. Sessions are built around real assessment tasks, not generic film appreciation.
HL adds a fourth component, the Comparative Study, which requires independent research and a substantial written essay comparing films from different cultural contexts. The workload is higher and the analytical demand is greater. A tutor helps HL students manage all four components alongside their other DP subjects.
Yes. While the film itself is produced as a team, each student submits an individual written commentary on their production role. A tutor works with your child on that written commentary, ensuring it meets IB assessment criteria regardless of what the rest of the group produces.
Starting in DP Year 1 is strongly recommended. The Film Portfolio journal is built throughout the course, and habits formed early, such as using precise film terminology and referencing assessment objectives, are very difficult to retrofit in Year 2 under deadline pressure.
Yes. Tutors run timed practice analyses, give feedback on film language use and argument structure, and help students prepare for the oral presentation format required in the external Textual Analysis assessment.
Film is an approved subject for the IB Extended Essay, with a 4,000-word essay in the category of Film. Students who choose this route benefit from a tutor who understands both the Film guide and the Extended Essay assessment criteria. Theory of Knowledge connections are also natural in Film, particularly around the knowledge question of how film constructs meaning.
