IB DP Computer Science — SL and HL

Seven core topics. One HL extension that separates a 5 from a 7.

IB DP Computer Science spans seven mandatory topics at both SL and HL, with HL students adding an additional Option topic and tackling extended Paper 3 case study questions. The Internal Assessment requires a fully documented software product, making this one of the most technically demanding DP subjects on offer.

System FundamentalsCore topic 1 — system design life cycle and resource management

Computer OrganisationCore topic 2 — CPU architecture, primary and secondary memory

NetworksCore topic 3 — protocols, topology, and VPNs

Computational ThinkingCore topic 4 — algorithms, pseudocode, and flowcharts

Abstract Data StructuresHL only — stacks, queues, trees, and linked lists

The IB Diploma Grading System Explained

IB Diploma subjects are graded on a 1 to 7 scale, with 7 the highest. Computer Science contributes up to 7 points toward the full diploma total of 45.

Top Performers – Grade 7 Award

A grade 7 in IB DP Computer Science requires consistent command of HL abstract data structures, Paper 2 object-oriented programming, and a high-scoring Internal Assessment product.

Why IB DP Computer Science is harder than it looks

IB DP Computer Science combines programming, theory, and a substantial software IA — three very different skill sets assessed in very different ways. This section covers what typically trips students up and what targeted 1:1 support actually changes.

IB DP Computer Science is examined across two external papers and one internally assessed component. Paper 1 tests system fundamentals, networks, computational thinking, and — for HL students — abstract data structures including stacks, queues, linked lists, and binary trees.

Paper 2 focuses on object-oriented programming. Students must write, trace, and evaluate code in an IB-defined pseudocode style that differs from Python or Java syntax. Many students fluent in real-world programming still lose marks here by ignoring IB command term conventions.

The Internal Assessment requires students to design and develop a working software product for a real client, producing a planning document, design record, and video demonstration. The IA is worth 30% of the final grade at both SL and HL — a poorly scoped product is one of the most common sources of preventable mark loss.

HL students additionally sit Paper 3, a case study paper released in advance. This tests application of the entire syllabus to a novel technology scenario and rewards students who have genuinely internalised the theory rather than memorised definitions.

  • Paper 1: System fundamentals, computer organisation, networks, and HL abstract data structures
  • Paper 2: Object-oriented programming in IB pseudocode
  • Paper 3 (HL): Pre-released case study, applied analysis
  • IA: Software product with planning, design, and video evidence

Key takeaways

  • HL adds abstract data structures and a pre-release case study paper
  • Paper 2 uses IB pseudocode, not Python or Java — a common exam pitfall
  • The IA is worth 30% and requires a real client and working software product
  • Command terms like 'construct', 'trace', and 'evaluate' carry specific mark-scheme meanings
  • Online tutoring lets students book sessions around programming lab time and deadlines

My tutor went through the IA client interview process with me from scratch. I had no idea how to scope the product before our sessions — by the end I had a full design record and a working prototype.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything parents ask about IB CS tutoring.

Straight answers on how Talimat supports IB DP Computer Science students at SL and HL.

What is the difference between IB CS SL and HL?

SL covers seven core topics and sits Papers 1 and 2. HL covers the same core plus Topic 5 (abstract data structures), an extended Paper 1, and Paper 3, which is based on a pre-released case study. HL students also complete the same IA as SL.

How much of the IB CS grade comes from the Internal Assessment?

The IA is worth 30% of the final grade at both SL and HL. It requires a fully documented software product built for a real client, covering planning, design, development, and a video demonstration.

Can a tutor help my child choose their IA product idea?

Yes. Our tutors work through client identification, product scoping, and criterion A planning with students. Starting with a well-scoped idea is the single biggest factor in achieving a strong IA mark.

Does my child need to know Python before starting IB CS?

No prior programming language is required, but familiarity with Python or Java is helpful. The IB assesses Paper 2 in its own pseudocode style, so tutors spend time on IB-specific syntax conventions regardless of prior experience.

Can we start tutoring mid-year or just before the exams?

Talimat accepts students at any point in the IB cycle. Mid-Year 1 starters often focus on building IA momentum; Year 2 students typically prioritise Paper 1 theory revision and Paper 2 pseudocode practice.

What if we relocate during the IB programme?

Talimat operates online across 10+ countries. If your family moves from Dubai to Riyadh or anywhere else in the region, your child keeps the same tutor and continues without interruption.

How quickly can we get a tutor?

Most families are matched with a suitable IB CS tutor within 10 minutes of contacting us. Sessions can begin as soon as the same day, subject to tutor availability.

Is IB Computer Science recognised by universities in the UK and USA?

Yes. IB DP Computer Science HL is widely recognised by universities in the UK, USA, Canada, and across the Gulf as a rigorous preparation for Computer Science, Engineering, and related degree programmes.
