Edexcel A Level Spanish (9SP0) tests listening, reading, translation, extended writing, and an individual research project across three linear papers. This page explains what makes 9SP0 genuinely difficult and what a specialist tutor changes.
The 9SP0 specification assesses four assessment objectives simultaneously. AO1 rewards accuracy in grammar and vocabulary; AO2 rewards understanding of spoken and written Spanish; AO3 rewards structured analytical writing; AO4 rewards independent critical research into a Spanish-speaking society or cultural theme.
Most students lose marks on Paper 2 (Writing) through imprecise use of the subjunctive, conditional structures, and subordinate clauses under timed pressure. A specialist Edexcel A Level Spanish tutor isolates exactly which grammatical structures are costing marks and rebuilds them through targeted past-paper drills.
The Individual Research Project, worth 20% of the final A Level grade, requires students to produce a 2,750-word written report and defend it in a 12-to-14-minute oral examination. Many students underestimate the analytical depth required. Online tutoring from a subject specialist makes a measurable difference here.

Specification 9SP0 — Pearson Edexcel GCE
The 9SP0 linear specification assesses listening, reading, translation, extended analytical writing, and an individual research project. Every paper is sat at the end of Year 13, with no coursework modules outside the IRP oral component.
Paper 1 (9SP0/01) — Listening, Reading and Translation — 2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, 40% of A Level
Paper 2 (9SP0/02) — Writing — 2 hours 40 minutes, 100 marks, 40% of A Level
Paper 3 (9SP0/03) — Individual Research Project — oral exam 12–14 minutes, 50 marks, 20% of A Level
AS Level (8SP0) — Standalone qualification: Paper 1 and Paper 2 only, does not contribute to A Level grade
AO balance — AO1 accuracy, AO2 comprehension, AO3 analysis, AO4 independent research
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level Spanish uses a five-grade letter scale: A is the highest grade attainable, followed by B, C, D, and E. There is no A* at A Level. AS Level (8SP0) uses the same A to E scale as a standalone qualification.
Top Performers: Grade A Award
Achieving a Grade A in 9SP0 requires consistently high performance across analytical writing, accurate translation, and a well-argued Individual Research Project oral defence.
The A to E grading scale shown applies specifically to Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level qualifications and differs from the numerical scales used in GCSE and IGCSE programmes. Speak to your Talimat Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance relevant to your child's school.

Minutes to Tutor Match
From enquiry to confirmed session
Live sessions, Monday to Saturday
Your Academic Consultant reviews your child's current 9SP0 paper scores and identifies which assessment objectives — AO1, AO2, AO3, or AO4 — are costing the most marks.
We match your child to a vetted Spanish specialist within 10 minutes. Every tutor holds a relevant degree and has passed Talimat's 14-step vetting process.
Each live 1:1 session targets a specific 9SP0 component: Paper 1 translation drills, Paper 2 essay structure, or IRP oral practice. No generic revision, every task is mapped to the mark scheme.
Your tutor runs timed past-paper mocks under exam conditions, then delivers written feedback aligned to Pearson Edexcel's published examiner reports so your child knows exactly where marks were gained and lost.
All tutors are vetted, degree-qualified, and 9SP0-familiar.

Straight answers about 9SP0, session structure, pricing, and what your child can expect from their first lesson.
Not necessarily. The most effective 9SP0 tutors are those who know the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme, examiner reports, and assessment objectives in depth. Native fluency helps, but specification literacy is what determines your child's grade.
Yes. Your tutor can guide topic selection from the approved theme list, help structure the 2,750-word written report, and run repeated mock oral defences to prepare your child for the 12-to-14-minute examination.
Yes. AS Level (8SP0) is a standalone linear qualification covering Paper 1 and Paper 2 only. It does not contribute to the final A Level (9SP0) grade. Some students sit AS Level in Year 12 for UCAS tariff points independently.
