Edexcel A Level French (9FR0) tests far more than vocabulary. It demands sophisticated grammar control, cultural analysis, and independent research skills that classroom teaching rarely has time to develop individually. This section explains where students struggle and what targeted tutoring changes.
The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level French specification (9FR0) is a linear qualification assessed entirely through terminal examinations at the end of Year 13, alongside a spoken language endorsement.
Paper 1 (1FR0/01) tests listening, reading, and translation across authentic French-language sources. Paper 2 (1FR0/02) requires extended written responses in French, including an essay on a literary text or film studied from the prescribed list.
The independent research theme underpins the speaking endorsement, requiring students to present and defend a personal investigation into an aspect of French-speaking society or culture.

Specification 9FR0 — Linear A Level
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level French (9FR0) is examined across Paper 1 (listening, reading, and translation) and Paper 2 (written response to literature or film, plus a French essay). The spoken language endorsement is assessed separately and does not carry a weighted mark towards the A to E grade.
Paper 1 (1FR0/01) — Listening, reading, and translation into English — 2 hours 30 minutes, 50% of the A Level
Paper 2 (1FR0/02) — Written response in French to a literary text or film, plus a French essay — 2 hours 40 minutes, 50% of the A Level
Spoken Language Endorsement — Independent research theme presented and defended in French — graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction
Assessment Objectives — AO1 (understanding), AO2 (communication), AO3 (knowledge of language), AO4 (knowledge of cultural context)
AS Level (8FR0) — Standalone qualification, Paper 1 and Paper 2 only — does not count towards the A Level grade
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level French uses a five-grade letter scale from A to E. There is no A* at A Level. AS Level (8FR0) uses the same A to E scale as a standalone qualification.

DIFFERENT EXAM BOARD?
Clear answers about the 9FR0 specification, how sessions work, and what to expect from Talimat support.
The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level French specification code is 9FR0. It consists of two examined papers, Paper 1 (1FR0/01) and Paper 2 (1FR0/02), plus a spoken language endorsement graded separately as Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
Yes. Edexcel AS Level French (8FR0) is a standalone linear qualification. It does not count towards the A Level (9FR0) grade. Students who sit AS Level and then continue to A Level sit entirely separate terminal examinations at the end of each year.
Pearson Edexcel publishes a prescribed list of French literary texts and films for Paper 2 (1FR0/02). Your tutor will confirm which text or film your school has selected and build all written response practice around that specific set work.
The spoken language endorsement does not carry a percentage weighting towards the A to E grade. It is reported separately on results certificates as Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Universities see the endorsement result alongside the grade, so a strong performance matters for competitive applications.
Sessions cover Paper 1 listening and reading comprehension, translation into English and into French, Paper 2 essay planning and written accuracy, and preparation for the independent research theme. Tutors use past 9FR0 papers and Pearson mark schemes throughout.
A Level tutoring with Talimat starts from AED 65 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and you can cancel anytime with no hidden fees. Your Academic Consultant will recommend a session frequency based on your child's current performance and timeline to exams.
Yes. Talimat matches students at any point in the academic year. Whether your child is beginning Year 12 or preparing for final 9FR0 examinations in Year 13, the tutor will assess current performance and build a targeted plan from the first session.
Yes. Talimat offers mock exams and written feedback as part of the platform. Your child can complete timed past 9FR0 papers, receive detailed marking feedback from their tutor, and use the results to identify which paper components need the most attention before the summer series.
