This is not two subjects bolted together. The 9ETO specification demands that students simultaneously apply linguistic analysis and literary critical frameworks across unseen texts, spoken language data, and original creative writing. Here is what that actually means in practice.
The Pearson Edexcel A Level English Language and Literature specification (9ETO) requires students to synthesise skills that are assessed separately in most other English qualifications.
Paper 1, Telling Stories, asks students to analyse prose fiction using AO1 and AO2, then produce their own original narrative or re-creative piece with a written commentary explaining their linguistic and structural choices.
Paper 2, Voices in Speech and Writing, moves into non-fiction and spoken language. Students compare a set text with an unseen non-fiction source, applying knowledge of discourse, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics alongside traditional literary analysis.
The Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) contributes 20% of the final A Level grade and requires two extended pieces: one original creative writing task and one analytical essay on a chosen text and spoken language data set. Examiners report that candidates frequently undermine strong creative work by writing weak commentaries that fail to use subject terminology precisely under AO1.
A specialist Edexcel A Level English Language and Literature tutor helps students build the dual analytical voice that the 9ETO mark scheme rewards, whether that is in online tutoring sessions or through structured NEA drafting support.

Specification 9ETO — Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level
The 9ETO specification is fully linear. AS Level results do not count towards the final A Level grade. All three assessment components, Paper 1, Paper 2, and the NEA, are weighted and graded together at the end of Year 13, making early and sustained preparation critical.
Paper 1: Telling Stories — 40% of A Level — prose fiction analysis and original narrative writing with commentary. Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes.
Paper 2: Voices in Speech and Writing — 40% of A Level — set text plus unseen non-fiction, spoken language analysis. Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes.
NEA: Original Writing and Commentary — 20% of A Level — two extended pieces submitted before the summer exam series.
AS Level (8ET0) — Standalone qualification, does not count towards A Level grade. Assessed via Paper 1 and Paper 2 only.
Assessment Objectives — AO1 to AO4 apply across all components, with AO5 (original writing quality) additionally assessed in Paper 1 and NEA.
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level uses a five-grade letter scale from A to E. There is no A* grade at A Level for this qualification. AS Level uses the same A to E scale as a standalone result.
Top Performers – Grade A Award
Grade A at Edexcel A Level requires exceptional command of AO1 to AO5 across both examined papers and the NEA portfolio, demonstrating sophisticated analytical and creative writing skills.
The grading scale shown reflects the Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level framework and may differ from Cambridge IGCSE, IB, or other Pearson programmes. Speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific grade boundary guidance.

Answers to the questions parents and students ask most often before their first session.
The 9ETO specification combines linguistic and literary analysis. Students study both prose fiction and non-fiction texts, produce original creative writing with a commentary, and analyse spoken language data. The 9EN0 specification focuses on language study without the literary analysis or fiction writing components of 9ETO.
No. The Pearson Edexcel GCE AS Level is a standalone qualification. It is assessed separately and the result does not contribute to the A Level grade. Students sit the full A Level at the end of Year 13 under the linear assessment model.
The Non-Examined Assessment contributes 20% of the final A Level grade. It consists of two extended pieces: one original creative writing task and one analytical essay. Students submit the NEA portfolio before the summer exam series in Year 13. Schools and centres set internal deadlines ahead of the Pearson submission window.
AO1 (subject terminology and accurate written expression), AO2 (analysis of language and form), AO3 (contextual understanding), and AO5 (quality of original writing) all carry marks across Papers 1 and 2 and the NEA. Examiner reports note that AO1 precision in commentary writing is the most common source of mark loss.
All Talimat tutors hold a relevant degree in their subject area and pass a 14-step vetting process. For English Language and Literature, tutors typically hold degrees in English Language, English Literature, Linguistics, or combined programmes, with direct experience of the Pearson Edexcel GCE specification.
Yes. NEA drafting support is one of the most common reasons students book Edexcel English Language and Literature tutoring. Your tutor works through successive drafts of both the creative writing piece and the analytical commentary, helping you meet the AO1 and AO5 criteria that examiners assess in the portfolio.
A Level sessions start from AED 65 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and no hidden fees. You can cancel at any time. Your Academic Consultant will outline the recommended session frequency based on your child's current stage and target grade.
Sessions run Monday to Saturday, Gulf Standard Time, giving families in the UAE, KSA, Qatar, and Oman flexible scheduling options around the school week and exam preparation calendar.
