AQA 8300 Specification
AQA GCSE Mathematics (8300) is assessed across three 1 hour 30 minute written papers worth 80 marks each. Paper 1 is non-calculator; Papers 2 and 3 permit a calculator. Students sit either Foundation (grades 1-5) or Higher (grades 4-9) tier.
Paper 1 (Non-Calculator) — 80 marks, 1h 30min, tests arithmetic fluency, surds, exact trigonometric values, and algebraic manipulation without a calculator
Papers 2 and 3 (Calculator) — 80 marks each, 1h 30min each, covering proportional reasoning, statistical diagrams, geometric proof, and real-world problem solving
Foundation vs Higher Tier — Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher is required for grades 6-9 and introduces topics such as circle theorems, iteration, and conditional probability
Assessment Objectives — AO1 (recall and use) accounts for 40%, AO2 (reason and interpret) for 30%, and AO3 (solve problems in context) for 30% of all marks
No Coursework — 100% written examination; all marks come from the three terminal papers sat at the end of Year 11
Talimat tutors cover the full AQA GCSE subject range, from Mathematics and the Sciences to Humanities and Languages, all in live 1:1 online sessions.
+ additional AQA GCSE subjects available on request.
AQA GCSE Mathematics uses a 9-1 numerical scale. Grade 9 is the highest mark awarded, reserved for exceptional performance; grade 1 is the lowest pass. Grades 4 and above are considered a standard pass.
Top Performers - Grade 9 Award
Grade 9 is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional mastery across all three AQA Mathematics papers, including Higher-tier only topics such as circle theorems and iteration.
The 9-1 grading scale shown applies specifically to AQA GCSE qualifications and may differ from Cambridge IGCSE, Edexcel, or IB programmes; speak to your Academic Consultant for board-specific guidance.

AQA GCSE Mathematics trips students up not because the content is obscure, but because the AO3 problem-solving questions demand more than recall. This section explains where marks are lost and what 1:1 tutoring changes.
The AQA 8300 specification tests three assessment objectives, and the one most students underperform on is AO3: solving unfamiliar problems in context.
AO3 accounts for 30% of all marks across the three papers. Classroom teaching covers AO1 recall well, but timed practice on novel, multi-step questions is where a 1:1 tutor earns their place.
For students in the GCC sitting AQA GCSE Mathematics, the challenge is often the non-calculator Paper 1. Without a calculator, topics like surds, exact trigonometric values (sin 30°, cos 60°), and algebraic fractions must be fully internalised.
A Talimat tutor works through AQA past papers question by question, identifying the exact mark-scheme steps a student misses, then drilling those patterns until they become automatic.
Key takeaways
Every student is matched to a tutor who knows the AQA 8300 spec, then follows a four-step process from diagnostic to exam-day readiness.

Trusted by Gulf families
Your child's Academic Consultant runs a short diagnostic covering Number, Algebra, Ratio, Geometry, and Statistics to pinpoint exactly which AQA topic areas are losing marks.
We match your child to a tutor who holds a Mathematics degree and has hands-on experience with the AQA 8300 mark schemes. A personalised study plan is set before the first session.
Every session is live and 1:1. The tutor works through AQA past-paper questions, explains the mark-scheme logic, and adjusts pace week by week based on what is sticking and what is not.
In the weeks before the exams, sessions shift to timed mock papers under exam conditions, followed by detailed feedback on AO1, AO2, and AO3 performance across all three papers.

Tier choice affects which grades are available. Talk to your Academic Consultant before the entry deadline.
Foundation covers Number, basic Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, basic Geometry, and introductory Statistics. The highest grade achievable is a 5.
Explore Foundation Tutoring/aqa-gcse-tutors/mathematics/higherHigher introduces circle theorems, iteration, conditional probability, and functions. Grades 6-9 are only available on Higher tier.
Explore Higher Tutoring/aqa-gcse-tutors/mathematics/paper-1Dedicated sessions targeting surds, exact trigonometric values, and algebraic manipulation without a calculator, the area most students find hardest.
Prepare for Paper 1Straight answers about the AQA 8300 specification, tier choices, and how Talimat tutoring fits into exam preparation.
Foundation tier covers grades 1-5 and is examined on a slightly narrower topic range. Higher tier is required for grades 6-9 and includes additional topics such as circle theorems, iteration, and conditional probability. A student cannot achieve grade 6 or above on Foundation tier.
There are three written papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 80 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator. Papers 2 and 3 both permit a calculator. All three are sat at the end of Year 11 with no coursework component.
Tier entry is typically confirmed before the exam series opens, usually in February of Year 11. Students can sometimes change tier up to the school's entry deadline, but this should be discussed with the school and the student's Talimat Academic Consultant as early as possible.
Higher-only topics in AQA 8300 include circle theorems, equation of a tangent to a circle, iteration, functions and composite functions, inverse functions, conditional probability, cumulative frequency and box plots at a deeper level, and proof.
AQA permits any scientific or graphical calculator that does not have a computer algebra system (CAS). The Casio fx-83GT and fx-85GT series are widely used by students. Tutors at Talimat can work with whichever approved model your child uses in school.
AQA GCSE Mathematics tutoring starts from AED 50 per hour. There is no enrolment deposit and no hidden fees. You can cancel at any time.
Yes. Talimat tutors use official AQA past papers and mark schemes to show students exactly which steps earn marks in AO1, AO2, and AO3 questions. This is especially important for multi-step Higher-tier problems where method marks are available.
AQA GCSE Mathematics is a UK-regulated qualification recognised by British curriculum schools and universities internationally. Many schools in the UAE and wider GCC use AQA alongside other boards. For progression to A-Level Mathematics or IB, a strong GCSE Maths grade is typically required regardless of board.
