Component 2 — Texts in Practice — Two scripted pieces from contrasting periods, 20% of A Level
Component 3 — Theatre Makers in Practice — Written exam, 2 hrs 30 mins, 40% of A Level
Assessment Objectives — AO1 (knowledge), AO2 (application), AO3 (analysis), AO4 (evaluation)

AQA A Level Drama and Theatre challenges students not just to perform but to think, write, and evaluate like a theatre maker. The gap between a C and an A grade almost always comes down to how confidently a student can argue a directorial or design intention in writing. This section covers where students lose marks and what targeted tutoring changes.
Component 3 is where most marks are won or lost. Section A asks students to analyse a set text as both a reader and a theatre maker, applying knowledge of a chosen practitioner such as Brecht, Stanislavski, or Artaud. Section B requires a detailed exploration of a second text, and Section C demands a critical evaluation of a live theatre production attended during the course.
In a classroom, teachers rarely have time to rehearse written responses to all three sections with every student. A 1:1 tutor works through past paper questions with a student, identifies which AO is costing marks, and rebuilds the response structure from the ground up.
For GCC families following the British curriculum, AQA A Level Drama and Theatre is increasingly recognised by UAE and Saudi universities as well as UK institutions. Students applying through UCAS benefit from a strong written component grade, particularly for Drama, English, or Performing Arts degree programmes.

AQA A Level Drama and Theatre assesses three components: Component 1 (devising, 40%), Component 2 (texts in practice, 20%), and Component 3 (a written exam worth 40%). Students must also attend at least one live theatre production for Section C of the written exam.
Component 3 is a 2 hour 30 minute written exam worth 40% of the full A Level. It covers a Section A set text analysis using a chosen practitioner framework, a Section B second set text, and a Section C live theatre evaluation. It is the single largest component by mark weighting.
The AQA specification links set texts to practitioner frameworks. Commonly studied practitioners include Bertolt Brecht, Konstantin Stanislavski, and Antonin Artaud. Students must demonstrate how a practitioner's methods would inform their approach to the set text as a theatre maker.
