AP LANG — COLLEGE BOARD FRAMEWORK
The AP English Language and Composition course is built around six Big Ideas: rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organisation, style, understanding, and conventions. The exam runs three hours and fifteen minutes and comprises a 60-minute multiple-choice section worth 45% and three free-response questions worth 55%.
Synthesis FRQ — Students read six to seven sources and build an evidence-based argument in response to a prompt.
Rhetorical Analysis FRQ — Students analyse how a writer's choices construct meaning and achieve purpose across a non-fiction passage.
Argument FRQ — Students develop a well-reasoned, evidence-supported position on a given topic without supplied sources.
Multiple-Choice Section — 45 questions across two reading passages and two writing passages, testing close reading and revision skills.
Scoring Scale — AP exams are scored 1 to 5; a score of 3 is generally considered passing, with 4 and 5 qualifying for college credit at most universities.

AP English Language and Composition is not a literature course. It is a course in rhetoric, argumentation, and non-fiction writing, and many students underestimate it until the FRQs expose gaps in their analytical skills. This section covers what the course actually demands and what 1:1 tutoring changes.
The AP Lang exam rewards students who can analyse how a writer constructs an argument, not just what the argument says. That distinction trips up strong readers who have not been trained to identify rhetorical choices such as appeals to ethos, shifts in syntax, or deliberate use of anaphora.
In the GCC, many students sit AP courses at international schools following a largely US curriculum. A 1:1 tutor fills the gap between classroom instruction and the precise essay structure the College Board rewards, particularly for the synthesis FRQ, where students must attribute, integrate, and evaluate multiple sources under timed conditions.
A well-prepared student can realistically target a 4 or 5. Consistent practice with released AP Lang FRQs, scored against the official rubric, is the single most effective preparation strategy. Our online tutoring sessions do exactly that, session by session.
Key takeaways
Every student starts with a diagnostic session to identify gaps across the three FRQ types and the multiple-choice section. Your Academic Consultant then matches you with a subject-specialist tutor.

AP Lang focuses on non-fiction rhetoric and argumentation; AP Literature focuses on fiction and poetry analysis. Many students find AP Lang more accessible because it does not require memorising literary texts, but the FRQ writing demands are equally rigorous.
The three free-response questions are the synthesis essay (build an argument using six to seven sources), the rhetorical analysis essay (analyse how a writer constructs meaning), and the argument essay (develop a position using your own evidence and reasoning).
The number depends on current performance and the target score. Most students working toward a 4 or 5 benefit from eight to twelve focused sessions, with at least one session dedicated to each FRQ type and timed full-practice conditions near the exam date.
Yes. Sessions cover both sections of the exam. Multiple-choice work focuses on rhetorical analysis of reading passages and revision skills in writing passages, which together account for 45 percent of the total AP score.
Yes. We run sessions Monday to Saturday in Gulf Standard Time and can begin at any point in the academic year. Your Academic Consultant will build a study plan around the remaining time before the exam.
All AP English Language tutors are briefed on the current College Board course and exam description, including the six Big Ideas, the three FRQ rubrics, and the multiple-choice question formats. Sessions are aligned to the official framework, not a generic writing curriculum.
A score of 4 or 5 is typically required for college credit at selective universities. A score of 3 may earn credit at some institutions. Students targeting highly selective admissions should aim for a 5 to strengthen their application.
Live 1:1 online tutoring allows tutors to annotate passages, co-draft thesis statements, and give rubric-aligned essay feedback in real time. The shared digital workspace replicates what happens in a strong in-person session, often with more flexibility for Gulf families balancing school schedules.
